My IDE hard drive was partioned. 500 gb split in 2 halves. One with OS and one without. Now all of a sudden Windows or the computer does not know what side of the hard drive it lives on. It's currently on the side without a OS and I can't find windows and it won't let me add windows to it. Cant get to my software or data?!
Help! Please

This is when you hope you have an XP CD to get the system started and up to the repair option. Many manufacturer's failed to ship system CDs but if you don't have one, try to borrow on for repair purposes only with the assurance you aren't trying to copy it.

Either way, Linux LiveCD would prove the hardware and allow rescue of the data but to fix the Master Boot Record, I can't see an alternative to the XP CD. Installing Linux from the CD would allow Grub to take over the booting process, offering the choice between Linux and XP so it might be the fix-all in the end. My personal preference at the moment is PCLinuxOS from the dotcom site of the same name.
