Hey guys,

Right, I know this question has been asked before, but I have another question that needs clarification.

Basically, my friend is looking to buy either a GTX 660 or a HD 7870 ghz edition.

He's found an MSI TwinFrozr GTX660 for £150, and a Sapphire 7870 ghz edition for £165.

Now, that's the cheapest 7870 he could find (except XFX, which I advised him to steer clear from, for reasons I'm sure you folks are aware of), and he can't spend any more than that, so these are his only two choices.

He asked me to find out whether or not the "black screen sound loop" issue with Sapphire's 7870 series had been resolved. I read on the Sapphire forum that they had resolved it, but they didn't mention if they had recalled all 7870s in circulation to be "fixed", or if you just have to contact Sapphire if you happen to receive a faulty card.

As such, my friend doesn't know if it's worth the risk of buying this 7870, based on the fact that it could be a faulty one.

If anyone knows anything about this, I'd be extremely grateful to hear about it.

Thanks in advance :)

The 7870 is a good card for 1080p gaming. most titles will run at ultra. However, like you pointed out, the 660 is a more trustworthy card. But to get similar (Maybe better) performance you would need a 660 ti which would be the same or more than the 7870. Personally, i would advise him to go for the risk and see what happens. I would say that 9.99999 times out of 10 you would get a good card.
Hope that helped!!!

Ah yes, sorry. I should've mentioned that.

The one he's looking at is SKU #11199-19-20G

The ones affected are SKU #11199-16 and #11199-19

Apparently, it only affects cards produced before 23 January 2013, but of course, there is no way of knowing when the card that my friend is considering was produced, until he actually receives it and can check the serial.

Would the additional -20G suffix denote a newer model with the problem corrected, I wonder?

EDIT: Google'd it, the -20G version does suffer from the issue in question.

There will always be bugged SKUs regardless cpu, mobo, vga, psu or even ram. 1 report from one unlucky guy doesn't make all SKU of the same model faulty. You can see many others who experienced good things with this card. Beside, as said above, this card is quite new. 20G suffix does represent the new model.

Yea also ignore the fact that TPU used many games that favor nvidia cards.
