I recently had a problem with my hard drive (it was making a strange noise like a mini engine that starts to accelerate and then stops, followed by a noise similar to a click or a scratch.)I decided to change te SATA cable, but it continued to do this thing.I noticed that I had left the other cable near te SATA one (don't know it's name but it is next to the SATA one and is consderably larger) turned on from the motherboard of the HDD.When I switched that cable of te DD disappeared completely from my list of devices(since both of the cables were disconnected from the HDD) and the noise stopped.Any idea what the problem might be?

Solution
Please list the model number of the drive.

Some of the power savings drives will actually park the drive head and only bring it back to the platters when it is needed. This can lead to a clunking sound. With laptop drives this sound is more of a ping sound and almost nu-noticable

The larger cable you disconnected was the POWER cable the small one is the DATA cable

Now all drives should do this so once you post a model number we can help better.
