i have an old computer and it's slow. it has .99 gigs of ram, a 250 GB hard drive and an intel pentium 4. what's my first step if i want to make it faster?

Solution

Marginally. Depends on what you're using it for. But RAM for that will be relatively expensive. Much more per GB than current DDR3 RAM.

considering it is a pentium 4 we're talking about here, if it has sata capability, it would only be sata I... and honestly, an ssd running through sata I would be a HUGE waste of money. going from 1 gb to 2 gb (max supported i'm sure) of ram would not be worth the money.

Put wheels on it and push it down a hill

Not worth upgrading mate, it is what it is, as the others have said spend your money on a new setup.

Depends on what you are using it for. My neighbors have a similar setup and only use it for web & email (they are 76+ yrs old). I defraged their hard drive a couple months ago, did a virus sweep and upgraded them to 2 gigs of ram (had it laying around in an hold computer). Made them happy, they think they have an awesome computer now.... lol
