Help with 7870 XT vs 7950

Solution

In what Universe? Umm ... this one, since most reviews show that a stock 760 > stock 7950 overall. Even the bench you posted just shows the 7950 only having a clear lead in Dirt Showdown and Hitman Absolution (and a slight lead in Crysis Warhead). Every other game either depends on the resolution/settings, or has the 760 winning...

Your build isn't great, and the FX6300 will be a bottleneck, so get the 7870XT because of less power consumption and almost identical performance to the 7950 unless you are running dual/triple monitors

Well as a 7870 LE owner I can say that with a 1200/1600 overclock the LE/XT's will perform a hair faster than a stock clocked 7950 with boost. I know you said you wont be overclocking but you are buying an unlocked CPU and an overclocking beast of a GPU so I'm wagering a fair bet it will happen at some time. However if you are totally serious on not overclocking than the 7950 will be slightly faster. It all comes down to if there a place where the $32 saved In going for the 7870 would benefit your system. My suggestion would be the 7870 XT and then use the saved money to invest in a higher quality motherboard (The Asus LE's are known to have issues) or an aftermarket cpu cooler and try some overclocking. The FX's are probably the easiest chip to overclock I have ever seen. I got mine to run at 4.5Ghz on less than stock voltage resulting in absolutely zero extra wear and tear on the CPU or motherboard.

The 6300 does not bottleneck. I use both a 6300 and a 7870 LE in the same rig, trust me i know. My 6300 used to handle 2X 6950's which are basically a 7970 with no bottlenecks, it's fine.

Between those two, the 7950 since it comes with 4 free games. The 7870XT does not show that it comes with any free games.

For the same price as the 7870XT, you should consider the GTX 760, which will outperform both of your original selections. It also comes with a free copy of Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

I think you need to look at your own bench you posted again. 760 wins on Battlefield 3, Crysis 3, Bioshock Infinate, Civilization V, Far Cry 3, Total War Shogun 2.

Manimal, your best bet (especially in Canada) ... really is the 760. It's basically 7950 performance. (a little better stock vs stock) for $259.
