Computer freezing randomly

Hey guys,

I'm working on my nephew's computer and need some help. The PC in question is about 6 years old and running Vista 32-bit.

At random times it completely freezes and forces me to do a hard reboot. It can occur when Windows is loading (in both regular and safe mode) and at any point after that. I've noticed the HDD LED stays totally solid when this happens.

I initially thought it was a problem with the RAM, so I tried running Memtest on it, which came back with nothing after 8 passes. I tried removing every stick except for one and it still didn't help.

I decided to eliminate all possibilities of software-related issues and do a full system restore, but again, no dice.

I suspect it's the hard drive but I'm not sure. I've tried every testing utility I could possibly find and they all say it's fine, yet in the rare instance I can get Startup Repair to work it says "Repairing disc errors" before freezing soon after.

Anyone have any ideas?

Solution
Well, there is one other item that can give those symptoms; a failing PSU. If the MB has been good up til now, I would suspect the PSU first.

Sorry for the late reply, we lost internet access for quite a while because of weather conditions in my area.

Anyway, I tried that and it didn't find any errors at all. I cleaned the temporary files too.

Also I replaced the HDD with a brand new one 3 days ago thinking it may have been failing (since it was constantly detecting disc errors and sometimes not being recognized at all) which surprisingly did nothing. I can't even get it to run long enough to install Windows.

I suppose the only possible culprit left is the motherboard.
