when I attempted to start it in safe mode i get a screen full of this--
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS\system32\c

i get this all the way down. can I fix this or am i out a computer? I don't have a windows disk as it came with windows xp installed/ second hand

Solution
microsoft provides the iso file which you can then burn to a disk. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=25129 you will need the product key which should be on the side or back of your case.

looks like a bad boot.ini according to that post. try typing that line into google and reading a few other posts and following the advice.
