Currently trying to figure out whether or not it would be worth it to get a cheap soundcard. I was looking at the Xonar DG or Xonar DGX. i'm currently using onboard audio from my Asrock z77 Extreme4.

Would it be worth the money to invest in a sound card?

To accompany a sound card, you need to have a good Audio output to feel the difference, do you have one? If you do, it is worth to upgrade, the difference is really great especially in games and movies.

When you say output are you referring to speaker/headphones?

If so I would be using Klipsch promedia 2.1 Speakers
And a pair of AKG k550 headphones.
I've found music sounds much better on from my ipod than on my computer.

I don't really work with sound. I do my fair share of gaming but I'm really looking at this from a listening to music stand point rather than a gaming one.

Yeah you will notice a difference. A positive one. There is nothing wrong with getting a soundcard, it would just be an upgrade in sound quality. The Xonar versions are pretty good, getting good reviews too.
