Hi Experts,

Need your help

I have two laptops Dell inspiron 15 with 4 gig of RAM with specification Technology
DDR3 SDRAM

Form Factor
SO DIMM 204-pin

Memory Speed
1600 MHz ( PC3-12800 )

The other is Acer Aspire 5734z which has 3 Gig Ram. DDR3 supports upto 4 gig ram
I need to upgrade

I am not sure if i can buy one ram of 2 gig for the same config of dell inspiron.. upgrade the new ram in my acer aspire.. since my acer has 2 gb ram and 1gb ram and total makes it to 3 gig.. thus once i upgrade the same to 4 gig i wil have one gig ram free

Can i use the same RAM for 1 gig in my Dell inspiron since am not sure what difference do i have in the RAMs of both th systems

Hi,

The Dell Inspiron supports a maximum of 4 GB (DDR3 Memory Type) using two 2 GB modules. So if you have 4 GB of memory on the Dell, then you have reached the maximum upgrade.

One the other hand, Acer Aspire 5734Z supports a maximum of 4 GB using two 2 GB modules but the memory type is DDR2. These two types cannot be interchanged. Yes, 3 GB is 2 GB + 1 GB modules currently installed, and if you replace the 1 GB with a 2 GB module, the removed 1 GB can only be used on a system that supports the DDR2 SODIMM module specification. For more details, refer the below links:

Good luck!

Thanks but the dell inspiron that i have and while i spoke to the customer care they confirmed that it supports 8 Gig.
Below is the type of RAM they suggest since it is DDR3 1600 MHZ with 204 Pins
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/category.aspx?category_id=8136&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&mfgpid=229431&Tab=Parts&stype=2"
Below is the laptop i currently have for dell

"Intel Core i3-3227U Processor, 4GB of Memory, 500 GB Hard Drive, 15.6-inch Display

Item # : 24025092
Mfg # : I15RV3763BLK"

So i have two questions why would the RAM that i purchase based upon the config for the dell not work on acer and also why would the acer RAM that i would be left with out of 2 + 1 combination as it would be 2+2 after upgrade, why could not i use 1 gig to the dell that has a maximum capacity of 8 gig..

I do not have the entire details of the ram for ACER but its a DDR3

Please suggest

I'm sorry for the confusion caused. The Dell Inspiron supports the DDR2 type and the Acer Aspire 5734Z supports the DDR3 type. As I said earlier, these two types are not interchangeable as their physical dimension varies and will not work.

Yes, Dell Inspiron 15 does support 8 GB, but that will be based on the model type of yours as there are many models under the series of Inspiron 15. If you have talked with them and they say 8 GB is the max, then definitely they are correct and I agree with them.

That said, the DDR2 and DDR3 cannot be interchanged on any system except for a few Motherboards that supports DDR2 and DDR3 which in your case is not.

Then you're good to go for the interchange. If the Dell Inspiron model supports DDR3, you just need to remove and replace as you like. It'll recognize the new memory.

Before that you might have to see the speeds of the memory installed in both the systems, not that its going to be an issue, but that, the whole memory system will default to the lowest speed available regardless of any higher speed memory installed along with in any particular system.

To check speeds, use this utility: http://www.memorystock.com/memscanner/SysInfo.exe

Good luck!
