I am trying to replace my Asus laptop HD with a new SSD. I have tried cloning the disks with Acronis True Image but it's not working (it won't recognize my local drive).

What I want to do is insert the blank SSD in the computer and hook up the original HD via USB in order to use the hidden Recovery partition and do a clean Windows 8 install on my SSD. Is this possible or will be running into problems?

I am technically challenged so I want to keep hardware manipulation to a minimal, that's why I am asking before taking things apart.

Solution
This may work depending on if the restore process allows you to pick the drive to restore to. Hopefully your sata ports are already set to AHCI mode. If not, it will most likely need enabled in order for the TRIM function to work properly on your SSD. You will also need to turn off disk defragging on your SSD There is no need to worry about these until after your OS is up and running on your SSD.

I am currently using Windows 8 but I don't have it on DVD. Asus inluded Windows on a "Recovery" partition on the hardrive so that's the only way I have of getting Windows on my new SSD drive.
