The dual core intel is a generic gaming choice, but it's still not quite cheap. Why don't gamers buy for example AMD Phenom II x4 965, witch is cheaper and runs 4 cores at higher frequency.
1: Save money.
2: Run background applications like YT, skype, torrents and other.

The X4 is a decent budget gaming cpu. It's individual cores are not as strong as the intel cores, the clock rate is only one part of the equation. Intel architecture takes fewer clocks to do the job.
Since few games use more that 2-3 cores, the i3 with hyperthreading seems to be more effective.

For me I will go 965 anyway. Its cheaper (sub 100) and has unlocked multiplier so can be easily OC'ed by using a good CPU Cooler.

Because the 965 isn't made anymore. So sometimes its hard to find. "Elitist" friends wouldn't care about such low end parts.
