Hi,

Can someone please make sense of what is going on...

I use a wireless connection to connect my PC to an aging G+ Belkin router, whenever I do a speed test (speedtest.net or other) when testing download speed the test first hangs at 0Mb/s for a few seconds, then jumps to about 5Mb/s then drops off again, then usually goes massive (Last time it went to 64mb/s) then drops off again and ends up around 10Mb/s.

This happens regardless of the device used, or if the connection is wired or not.

The connection to the router seems fine (less than 1ms ping).

Any help would be great

reset your router and try the speedtest again maybe you will need to upgrade the firmware ,if this not solve your issue i would try to check that belki non a friend house for speed test if hte test is the same then start to look around for a new router .

What type of internet provider do you have? DSL, cable, 4G?
Also, are the speed issues you mentioned happening all the time or only during certain times of the week?
Lastly, you can narrow down whether or not your router is the issue by going to a friend's house who is not having the same problem and try to hook up your router there.

Ok, sorry for the delay.

I found the router I used before the Belkin (A Thompson one) and ran speed tests on that one.

Here are the results over two devices:

PC - Wireless - Belkin - 5.2MB/s (Unstable)

PC - Wired - Belkin - 9.87 MB/s (Unstable)

PC - Wireless - Thompson - 6.4 MB/s (Unstable)

PC - Wired - Thompson - 9.7 MB/s (Unstable)

iPad - Wireless - Belkin - 9.42MB/s (Stable)

iPad - Wireless - Thompson - 8.81 MB/s (Stable)

I would not trust the speeds on the unstable tests as it was going all over the place. Other info about it, my isp is TalkTalk and it is a dsl service, it happens at all times of the day , all week long. The problem seems to be not with the router but the PC.

Any ideas?

Ok, it doesn't look like either router is the problem. I'm just wondering if your PC is the problem, or if your ISP is a little oversaturated in your area. One last question, if you run ping tests to any website from ipad and pc, are the results somewhat consistent or do they jump all over the place? try to watch it for at least a couple minutes. Just using the belkin router should be ok.

Ok, I have done some ping tests.

iPad to www.google.com over wireless to the Belkin router:

20 tests, these are the times in ms

round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 39.150/48.342/124.182/17.712

Then the same tests again from the PC over wireless to the Belkin:

20 tests, time in ms

The results seem to show that it is not too stable on either device, but the iPad gets much better results than the PC
