Hello,

I run Windows 8 on my Desktop and my internet runs just fine on my Netgear 5 Port Switch. Sometimes I bring my work laptop home and I use one of the other 5 ports on my switch for my laptops internet. This works just fine however when I plug in my laptop I stop getting internet on my desktop. I get the error "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

I hope to be able to use the internet on both computers simultaneously but I cannot figure it out. I have tried restarting the Switch, the modem, and my desktop but I have no luck.

Thank you for your help.

the problem will most probably be with the router, which is where the computers get their IP configuration from. make sure that the router has no funny settings and that DHCP and DNS are enabled. you will want the router to give out dynamic IPs and not having static ones. this is however assuming you have a router as well as a modem. with a basic modem you can only connect 1 pc at a time, whereas a modem+router will be able to provide internet to multiple devices.

you will want to make sure that you have an actual router, not only a switch for connecting 2 or more computers to your modem. A switch doesn't necessarily have any ability to give out separate IP addresses (aka DHCP - assigns IP addresses).

Also, your work laptop may have a static IP set in its TCP/IP settings.
