Future gaming pc build, any suggestions?

Hi guys,

After weeks off thinking i came up with the following system that i want to get as a new gaming system.

I have come up with this:

CPU Cooler:

Noctua NH-D14
Dual fan, PWM Y-kabel 1 x € 84,90*

Graphic card:

NVIDIA MSI N770 TF 2GD5/OC
2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, SLI 1 x € 389,-*

CPU:

Afiak the new haswell processor isn`t really good for OC`ing thats why i made the choice for the older 3570k

Also i can choose for a EVGA 670 FTW 4gigs in SLI setup, but im comming from a gtx 480 SLI system and more often then not would cause problems with microstutters and/or poor support/performance. So i`m a bit hesitant of getting another SLI system. Thats why i choose the gtx 770 gamer card from MSI

My last question is the CPU cooler, i want to get a OC going and i dont know if the noctua cooler is enough for that and should be thinking of a h100i watercooler.

So what do you guys think?

Two last things: for the cooler, at the price you're looking at, why not consider the H100i or the H80i?
Also, the seagate 2TB HDD is known to have some problems because of the obscure amount of data written on each platter (along with strange number of headers on each one). Basically meaning that you may get unlucky and have a HDD that is much slower (because there are two models out there, one with an even amount of platters and headers which will get you maximum speeds and reliability). To avoid it, you could buy a 3TB drive (because it has 3x1TB platters and 2 headers on each platter) which shouldnt cost...

1. I completely agree with your choice of the GTX 770
2. The cooler will be good for overclocking. However, I think you'd like the h100i watercooler, its not much more and quite simple to set up.

Also, id think about getting a more reliable SSD. A 128GB 840 Pro should last you 7-10 years (on the low end) and it's not that much more expensive. I have it and the read speeds (540 MB/s) are insane, booting windows 8 in under 10 seconds. The write speeds are about 3x faster than the SSD you have.

Thnx for the info on the ssd kingbob, i will certianly look into that. Im glad i made the right choise about the gfx card thats what something i couldnt get my head around what whas the better option.

Any thoughts on the cpu itself? Should i get a new haswell cpu or could i stick with the 3570k and get some years of gaming out of it still?

I dont know if you have any further suggestions about the rest of the build or is this good as it is?

Yeah the CPU question is a bit difficult. The new haswell CPU's did not impress me very much. However, the Sandy bridge CPU's were the ones that were meant to be overclocked through the roof. With that in mind, both ivy and haswell wont be great at overclocking so id just go with the haswell chip.

... unless of course you were interested in the 2011 chipset >:p

I think i cant really justify spending 600 euro`s on a processor that is more then 1/3rd of my total build cost ;) Or are you reffering to the 3820 one? The reason i ask because i made a mistake on my old pc getting a cpu with a dead socket 1366 with no room to upgrade it in the future.
Although im a bit confused, i thought the 3570k with its unlocked mulitplier whas the best in overclocking that you could get. And the new haswell processer just a bit lacking on the OC side of things?

Honestly, pretty much any Intel socket you buy will be dead. I think the reason you heard that about the ivy bridge series is because people just aren't used to over clocking has well yet. Sandy was the best though.

Note: The smaller the architecture, the harder to do huge overclocks.

Keep in mind that real-world performance differences between modern SSDs are almost non-existent. It's a hard thing to admit when you've spent all this time analysing SSD benchmarks, but it just doesn't translate into boot times, load times etc... anything from an Agility 3 upwards (and probably less) will be equally fast.

So I'd decide by reliability and price. Samsung have an excellent reputation for reliability and the 840 is one of the most competitively-priced drives on the market. The 840 Pro is the best consumer SSD in existence (by the benchmarks) and actually not the most expensive either, so a good option if you just really want to own the best.

after more research i learned that the new broadwell cpu`s are also using the lga 1150 socket i decided to change to the I5 4670k with a MSI Z87-G45 Gaming mobo

This will complete my final build with:

Or get a 1TB, or try to find a 2TB WD drive that doesnt have any problems. Sorry if its a little bit confusing. If you have any questions I can try to explain it a little bit more. Ironically I just purchased a 3TB Seagate drive today...

I changed it to this RAM, i dont have much knowledge about the timings and stuff, but i`ll go what you suggested. Is 1600mhz enough as far as i could see it doenst really is a boost to change it to 1866mhz for example.

Also i changed the harddisk to the seagate baracudda 3gb ;)
Both where almost excatly the same price.

Good switches! The 1600 RAM is good for gaming, and the timing also helps. I have the 1866 version, however I bought it when it was about $50 cheaper. It only really helps you if you do a lot of video editing.

I hope you meant 3 TB ;)
