Computer Powersupply Issue?

I have a Digital Storm gaming computer that has a Chieftec 1000w power supply (model 1CFT100G-DF) installed. I am running an AMD Phenom II x4 955 Quad Core processor in an Asus M4A79T Deluxe motherboard. From time to time, my system completely powers down, and will not power back up. Even the power indicator light goes off inside my cabinet. If I unplug the machine for a while (anywhere from 1 day to 1 month) the machine will eventually power back up. I can tell if it is going to power up because when I plug the power cord into the back of the power supply, a red indicator light inside the box lights up. If the light does not come on, the machine will not start. Nothing. Dead. Nada......

Is this a power supply issue, or is this a motherboard issue? How can I check?

Solution
Next time it happens:
PC Shuts down
Unplug AC cord from PSU.
Cycle the case power button a few times
Plug AC cord back in
Turn PC On.

If you can't do that then it is very likely it could be a thermal issue in the PSU. That PSU has (4) +12V rails all rated 20 Amps or better. You are not overloading a particular rail , are you?
Doi you have access to a different psu to try?

IMO, it does not sound line a psu issue, more like a connector issue. Make sure your 24pin and 4/8 pin plugs are solidly connected. You don't say what gpu you're using, but a 1kw psu will handle most anything except arc welding.

I suspect the PSU unit. His mainboard doesn't have onboard video to test against. The PSU is either shutting down the system as it should to protect your equipment(over current/over voltage protections) or... is faulty and failing on its own or... your main-board BIOS could be shutting your system down due to excess thermals?

I would be suprised if it is an overheating issue anywhere other than the psu. Processor is liquid cooled. Case has two 120 mm cooler master fans and two 200 mm cooler master fans. Air flow is good. Video card temps are good. Oh, video cards are 2x Crossfire ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB.....
