Nvidia cards work, but ATI will not.

So when I built my PC a little while ago I originally started with a Radeon card which was pretty good, I'm not sure what kind it was I could probably find the box somewhere. But, after the build was complete and I go to boot her up it doesn't post a bit of hard drive action but nothing else. So after a hard couple of nights I swallow my pride and take it to a local computer guy (big mistake). He charges me about $400 for a complete system rebuild and a new graphics card (a Gigabyte HD5670) yet he says the display randomly cuts out after about 15 minutes. I basically got charged for him to mess with my machine. I really wasn't getting anywhere with this guy so I did some research on my own and one of the technicians recommended an Nvidia card so I bought a GTS 450 and it's running good but I want an upgrade. I also want to run triple monitor set up with this new card so I think I have very few options. If anyone could shed some light on why I can't use an ATI card much would be appreciated :)

Sorry about the long story just wanted to get all the details

System Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5 760 @ 2.80 GHz
MOBO: Intel DH55HC
GPU: GTS 460
Ram: 2x 4GB Corsair DDR3 XMS
PSU: Corsair THX 750
Case: Haf 922

That's not the problem. The only graphics card that was in before the 5670 was the Radeon which they PC wouldn't post with it. I'm running the GTS 450 fine currently, but want to run a triple monitor setup soon and can't with that card.

Are you sure that original amd card was not doa when you first got it?

Secondly I fix computers and 400 dollars is highway robbery for what he did. The most I would charge for something like that would be 200 and that would include a new video card and everything reinstalled and what not.

Yes I got completely ripped of, but I've gotten a bit smarter about computers since then. I was thinking it might have been a DOA but that still leaves why the second ATI card would only work for about 15 mins then cut out unanswered. I was thinking about trying out a friends ATI card but am a bit worried I might mess it up.
