I am trying to build a new pc for my dad since his using a 10 year old dell xps(its a damn sturdy/durable computer) but its getting way too slow.
He doesn't need anything fancy. He just needs to watch some high quality tv shows/movies on the computer. I dont want to build him a slow computer that he has to switch after a year but a decent one. budget is probably about $500. lower the better. There are the parts i'm thinking about.

Case: Haf 912($50)
CPU: a6-6400k
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-F2A55M-HD2 Socket FM2 A55 mATX
($105 for CPU/Mobo Combo. Deal from local store.)
Ram: Corsair Vengeance Red 8GB DDR3 1866 MHz.($79.99)
HD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD($68.79)
Power Supply: Corsair Builder series CX 430 Watt ATX/EPS 80 Plus($39.99)
Extras: Cheap optical reader and wireless card.($40 together)

Total Price: $385.

Will this be a good set up? Should I spend about 30 more bucks and upgrade to A8-6600K? or just spend more for A10-6800K? I will still be under the budget of $500.

HAF 912 is an ATX Mid Tower. I would get your dad an mATX Mini Tower (the mobo you picked is an mATX form factor also). This Rosewill one is a good value (and I own it) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147123

Also, the PSU wattage is overkill; get a higher quality one at a lower wattage, like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151077

The RAM is overkill for that processor; get 1 4GB stick of 1333 Mhz RAM and save some money.

Does your dad have any significant space requirements? If not, get a 120GB SSD instead.

RE: CPU, I would upgrade to an A8 at least. An A10 would be a good investment also.

You could go mini-ITX with this build very easily since there is no GPU, but...

if you can buy a dedicated gpu (a cheap one is good too) it'll out perform the onboard graphics (it will be a good investment)

You could go mini-ITX with this build very easily since there is no GPU, but mini-ITX motherboards cost about $50 more than their mATX counterparts.

If your dad is just watching movies, I don't think he'd benefit much from a dedicated GPU, especially if he has an A8 or A10. Not to mention the GPU would likely require a higher wattage PSU and thus additional cost. Plus, if you're going to spend $100 on this machine, I would add an SSD to it before considering a GPU.
