Is it necessary to put RAM in the first slot of the laptop?

I am thinking of getting a new RAM module. I have 1GB RAM in first slot and the second one is empty.

My Model is Lenovo 3000 N100 768 GZQ with Pentium T2060.

So I wanted to test the second slot before getting the new module. I put my current RAM in the second slot and the laptop wouldn't even show the Lenovo screen. Just the power lights would be on.

When I put the RAM in the first slot it was back to normal.

Does this mean that there should be a RAM in the first slot for the laptop to work?

And another Question, can I use a 2GB stick ?

A lot of times you need to populate the slots in order, so yes, it may not work if you skip slots. That laptop has a 2gb RAM limit so getting a 2 gig stick would be a waste. Get another 1 gig stick to go with the 1 gig stick you already have. Yes you can use a 2gb stick, but it's 2x the cost of a 1gb one.

OK, so I got a 2GB stick and inserted it in the first slot and the old !GB module in the second slot.

Now I have 3 GB of total memory:D.
Yay!:bounce:

Well, I use Linux.:star:
But I also have XP and it also reports 3 GB plus the BIOS also reports 3GB.
I also read the specs on Lenovo's site but the Lenovo forums have users with 3GB ram.

It seems to me that the Lenovo site has a typo or they may have meant a limit of 2GB per slot.

So, this is for anyone who wants to upgrade the RAM:
Your laptop would support upto 3GB of RAM and no more.:sourire:

I suspect , like my very old pc, if it says 2 gig max it would need a bios flash to run 3 gig. It would just beep a lot and refuse to post.
I advise the 1 gig stick addition.
