Mobo or CPU problem

Hi

Basically last night I left my computer on to transfer data and when I came down the screen was blank and both the power and red light were on. I turned off the computer and when I turned it on the screen stayed blank and there was no beeps, including no post beep. Following the guide with the list of possibilities I got to the point where my comp had just a mobo, CPU/heatsink and psu. There is still no beeping of any kind. The only sound is from the fans. I tested the psu by replacing it with my brothers even more powerful one but there was no change. The computer has otherwise been fine for months so its not a build problem. Can this only be a dead CPU or mobo or am I missing something?

you also tried every possible configuration of ram right?
also did you try to remove the cmos battery and putting it back in after a bit?

No, I skipped that one and went straight to the minimal boot, as it does not beep to indicate a lack of ram the problem must lie elsewhere

Yes I removed the CMOS, is 5 mins enough? Seen some say an hour but that seems a tad excessive for what cant be any more then a 5 volt battery

I've got a mate willing to try a CPU swap but he's away from home ATM, will have to wait a few days to do it.

I have two theories as to what could have broken the comp, one is the current heat wave hitting highs of 30 degrees, the second, although much more unlikely is the current heat wave has caused an explosion of crane flies. Normally I wouldn't even consider these a possibility but they are attracted to artificial light like a moth to a flame and when the ceiling lights go out the computer becomes the only light source. A few days ago I came down to find about 7 of em dead under my GPU, most likely from the fan on its underside. Perhaps one of them, however unlikely managed to get under the heatsink and get stuck against the CPU?

oh wow
it's unlikely that they could get stuck under the heatsink against the cpu but it's possible that they could have left residue on your motherboard
but yea if you could swap cpus and give it a shot that's the safest thing to try as of now
