Random Locking Up

My problem is random lock ups whenever I play any game. The only thing I've recently done is changed my headset as the old one decided to stop working. Ever since then my computer randomly freezes during games. Just before it's about to freeze my computer seems to run slow, for instance when I type in steam there's a delay for the letters to appear of about 1/2 a second which is very strange. Also in some games I've noticed strange sound "glitches" as another sign of my pc about to crash.

For instance I usually play any game for up to 1hr-1 1/2 hrs and then it will crash. Moments this has happened include driving head on into a tree in dirt 3, just playing football on fifa 13, random moments in bf3, grid and even chivalry.

I have a decent setup:

i5 2500k @ stock
gigabyte gtx 670
8gb 1600mhz exceleram
700w ocz psu
p67 motherboard
corsair a50 cpu cooler
500gb wd blue and a 120 gb crucial m4 ssd

So things I have tried before posting here:

AVG tune up (defrag, reg cleaner, virus checker)
Anti Malwarebytes scan and deleted infected items

-still crashed after these-

What I did last night and managed to play for 3 hours without a crash.

CCleaner - AVG tuneup missed loads of entries
Updated realtek hd drivers

What I've done could have sorted it but most likely it hasn't and I'm fresh out of ideas. Does anyone have any suggestions of what could be causing this problem? It's literally a black screen and then all the devices connected to my pc turn off, so headset switches off, keyboard, mouse, controller but the computer is still "on" if that makes sense...

I haven't manually looked at EventViewer but after a hard reset the computer just works as normal and it never mentions anything about crashing. All it asks is if I want to start in safe mode or not when it reboots.

Will try tonight although I've been watching my temps of my gpu and cpu and they never go over 65. One thing I noticed though when looking at my system specs it shows my ram as 7.98gb. Is this a sign of faulty ram? :/
