Cant delete files from my SD card.
4GB Sandisk.
I tried to format.
Card is write protected.
Card switch is not set to LOCK position.
But, I toggled the switch a few times on the card to unlocked, in case it was stuck.

Anyone know what's wrong?
Just a fried card?
Just buy another one for $6?

Solution

Ya, sometimes they just screw up, and its not worth the 3 hours of fixing, running to the store is most of the time easier with these SD. Make sure you pick the best answer to close the thread. Users will appreciate it.

Umm, make sure you have admin privages and try to check the disk for errors, errors can prevent files from being deleted because the drive is confused where the files are.

If that doesn't work, just buy a new card

I had a similar problem with a 32GB Sandisk USB flash drive. The dang thing was nearly brand new when it got stuck and was locked from editing. I couldn't format, delete, or add to it. The interwebs are full of similar stories. I was able to contact Sandisk and get a replacement. You might just consider getting a new card.

Forget any warranty.

It's easier to just buy a new one for $6 in 5 seconds.
BUY IT NOW. Thanks.

4G = $5.50
8G = $6.79
16GB = $12.95

I'll just upgrade to 16GB in case I ever need to film a longer video clip.

I had the same issue with the "current read-only state: yes". I was trying to figure out why I was not able to delete photos from my SD memory card when I right click the folder. There was no DELETE listed in the drop down window. I uninstalled the driver for my SD memory card reader and then reinstalled the driver. That fixed my issue. The delete option is now listed in the drop down window, when I right click on the picture folder. After reinstalling the driver, I ran a diskpart. The current read-only state is now no. I have a fairly new computer with the Windows 8 operating system. My guess is when my computer done an update, that's when the my issue started. I remember being able to delete photos from my SD memory cards before, when I first got the computer. Oh well, stuff happens.

Checked the SD card drivers and found them to be generic 32 bit. I'm running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. Is this an incompatibility problem? No delete shows in the drop down but i can see the data and pull it off the card. When i put the card in a USB adapter and plug it in, the full function, including delete files, will work on the card.

Nope. Tried it both ways and this card is marked for the locked position. Did not get a "delete". Pulled and re-inserted the card also. Nada. Thanks for the try.

I am having the same problem as you. Last night my 32 GB SD card no longer allowed me to delete files. Made sure the write protect was not on and rebooted computer to make sure there was nothing locked up. Still nothing. Luckily I had an external card reader and for some reason I was able to delete the files using that device. I then copied more files onto that card and tried again - no luck. Even able to format the card in the external reader, but that doesn't make any difference either.

Another SD card of the same make has no problems, so I guess that indicates it is something about the card itself that has changed and not the computer. ???

I have the same problem with my SD cards. After reading this thread I tried to read my card with an external card reader and the cards were OK. So is the built in card reader. I will try to re-install the driver and see it it works. Asus N550 running 8.1

I have the same problem since I installed an update for Windows 8.1 but now its fixed. Just right click on the file, from the drop down options click Properties. At the lower part of General tab un-check the three(3) boxes (read-only, hidden, archived). Eject the SD and restart your PC. Done in less than three(3) minutes.
Im not sure how it worked for me but im sure it's worth a try. ;)

To solve the problem follow the steps,
-Place your sd card
- Go to my computer
-Under My Computer find your sd card,(mine was "Eos Digital H"
-Right click on it and properties.
-Click on Sharing at top
-Click On Advanced Sharing
-Check Share this folder to activate permission
-Click on permission and give full permission to everyone.
-Apply and save setting
You are good to go.

For me, the change in Sharing settings did nothing positive (and I hope nothing negative.)  It was the lock on the SD adapter card for a micro SD.  I never had the problem of not being able to delete before starting to use a micro SD card (so I could also use it in a Asus Transformer.)  I checked that the card was completely in the unlock position before I put it in. However, in several tries, I saw that the switch was half way to locked each time after pulled out, no matter how carefully I pushed it to the unlocked position before re-inserting.  The switch must have moved closer to locked during insertion, since it would only go in the other direction when being pulled out (in just a pulling motion, not a push and pop.)  The edge of the SD slot in my Dell Tower PC must be slightly tighter than the one in my Canon camera.  Once I cut a very closely cropped slice of thin electrical tape and laid it across the gap where the switch would get moved to and pressed it along the sides, the Delete option has reappeared and worked thereafter.  The switch now remains completely in the unlocked position.  I was hesitant to put any tape on something going into the PC, but the tape does not appear to be nudged at all in going in and out and the tape is farther outside than the electrical contacts so it might be worth trying if the switch moved closer to locked during the push/pull in the PC.    JS10013

*****

This is interesting, but my card's lock switch is not moving when I insert to or remove my SD card from the Gateway tower. Here's an update, though. My kids gave me a quadracopter with a camera for Christmas (OK, OK, I know I'm the kid now). Anyway, it uses a tiny Micro SD and it works fine... in other words, I CAN delete pictures from it using the computer... the Delete option is available just like it USED to be with the regular SD card I use in my Nikon camera. I'm still suspicious that it has something to do with one of the automatic updates that Microsoft sent. If anyone can shed some light on my problem, your help would be greatly appreciated. I am the OP of this problem. Thanks !!!

After 4 hours trying to figure out this problem, I try to put the SD card in another notebook, and then, it just worked all fine... I gues the problem was a drivers ishue or mayber at the SD slot.

TH, working in other devices does seem to make an electronic solution that much more unlikely so a physical one moves up the scale even w/o evidence of its moving. Maybe the lock switch on the SD has become loose enough and the slot is tight enough that it moves closer to locked when inserted (and used), but then moves back to unlocked while out of sight inside via the pull in the other direction taking it out? Seems like a long shot, but not impossible, so, for myself, I would try either securing the switch via tape or marking the groove with something to see if it smears when inserted/removed. JS10013
