win8 game compatibility

A lot of games don't list win8 as a compatible OS, but most work just fine on it. However, I've recently seen the "windows installer 1639" error with a couple games. I've googled some solutions, but none have worked. I have ran the game in win7 compatibility mode, but the same error results. I've gone into the services.msc windows installer properties to try and change the startup type, but the drop down menu is greyed out. It does show the path going to the incorrect drive that doesn't contain the game files, but since it is greyed out I can't change it. What is the solution here?

Nope already saw that when I googled the issue. Tried it in my above post and it is greyed out so it cannot be changed to automatic.

Microsoft did not tout FULL 100% 'backwards' compatibility. If the makers are unable to provide support / solution, then you can't play it, simple. Normally when a OS update occurs the software makers (for STILL SUPPORTED SOFTWARE) will issue a patch to accommodate as the have test boxes sent by Microsoft specifically so MS can tout main-named programs are compatible. If the maker doesn't do it, your SOL.
