hello i need up upgrade my graphics card but i have a problem im stuck with a 250 watt proprietary power supply in an HPdc5850 small form factor pc so i cant upgrade the psu i need a decent low profile gpu that can run resident evil 5 at a steady 65+ frames per second right now i get around 50 frames with my current 8600GT 512 med on medium settings also my cpu is an athlon 64 X2 5800+ heres the info from my psu sticker

+12volt 7.5 amps
+5.08volt 17 amps
+3.33volt 15 amps
+12volt cpu 11.5 amps

i was thinking the HD7750 but idk i need a card that will help me achieve 65 to 75 frames per second in resident evil 5 i also have 4 gigs of ram and 800x600 screen res thanks so my question is if i run say a 9800GTX which requires a 6 pin pci off of both my pcie X16 slot as well as a second motherboard will everything be ok assuming the second psu has enough amps on the 12 volt rails i cant afford a new pc or a psu upgrade as my current psu is proprietary thanks

what i mean is use the proprietary psu in my pc to power the cpu mobo and pciexpress slot and then use a second psu to power the gpu's on board pcie 6 pin conector so what i wanna do is use one psu to power the pc and one psu to power the GPU

Hrmmm, knowing the GTX 9800 and the 7750, the 7750 is much closer to what is possible for you than the 9800 which is a lot more power hungry. The 8600 gt is rated around 45W and I think the 7750 is about 75W although you could try undervolting it and underclocking it, which might help. I think some of the software also lets you set a max powerdraw? I could be wrong though. At idle it will be using less than your 8600 gt at least:

As smeeze stated, I would be most worried about the amps on that 12V rail

If you are considering a 7750, what is you budget and what is your mobo? AMD AM2+? THe 5800 is a powerhungry CPU from what I remember, you might be able to find an equally fast athlon x2 nowadays that uses less, but it would have to fit your mobo I guess. That might be one way to reduce system power

To me it sounds like they have built the PSU to fit your case, so a new PSU will not fit. That doesn't mean it wont work. Check to see if there are any unusual connectors that are not found with regular PSUs. Also talk with people who work with computers. The people at HP and other companies don't think outside the box and would prefer to sell you a new computer.
