Hey,

Recently I asked a question here asking if I'd see a difference with OCing my 8350, but I said I had a 970 board. I didn't get much of a response as to if I'd see a difference. Recently I'd been thinking of upgrading to a 990 board, the ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0. (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3947171&CatId=7247). If I were to get this, would I see much of a performance difference? And how far can I push it? I have just ordered a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo along with Arctic Silver 5 compound, so that's what I'd use to cool it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

PC Specs:

FX-8350
8 GB Kingston HyperX Red 1600 MHz
ASUS M5A97 R2.0 (Hope to upgrade)
Corsair GS600 Gaming Series
XFX Radeon 7850 1 GB Core Edition
Thermaltake V3 Black Edition

Thanks,

Michael

nobody would be able to give you a solid number on how far your chip can be pushed.
Everyone is different and a lot of factors go into deciding how far your chip can be pushed.

The chip, cooling, power supply, ambient temps etc..

I have no doubt your CPU would hit 4.7 GHz with your set up but I don't know if you could go any farther or even get to that because we don't know your ambient temps and every chip is different.

As for the difference in overclocking from the different boards.
I am going to guess and say that the 990 will be a bit safer with those heatsinks and it probably has more power phases than your current board does so overclocking would be a bit safer and you might pull a little more out of your chip.

Is it really worth the $140 to upgrade my mobo then?

Is there a reason for you to OC? If you are looking for better performance. an upgrade of your GPU would be better. To invest $140 for the small gain you could get from OCing doesn't make sense.

This all the way.

For that $140 you could find a 7850 on ebay to crossfire with your 7870. which would give you biggest performance boost.

Sorry to rez the dead, don't know what you ended up doing but I personally think it is definitely worth it. Beyond the fact that you will hit 4.8-5.0 on air with that setup (all things considered but I have done it three times with an almost identical setup) you will gain stability and longevity with this motherboard. The only thing to consider is, how long will you keep this proccy, the AM3+ socket is going to be gone by the end of next year. I moved from an M5a97 R2.0 FX-6300 @ 4.4 to (two of these, one couldn't even hit 4.0) to the FX-8350 M5a97 which couldn't hit 4.1 and then to an m5a99x FX-8350 @ 4.9 right off the bat. I was so happy! Tried it again after I sold it and immediately went to the m5a99x on an fx-6300 at 4.715, then upgraded again to a FX-8350 and hit 4.8 once more! The current build is a coolermaster 650w, xfire 7850 2gb @ 1050/1200, 8gb 1600 vengeance, fx-8350 @ 4.8/9 "1.475v" M5a99x, Zalman Z7, 3x 24" eyefinity, and I couldn't be happier. It's all about the VRAMs my friend, cooling those bastards is the way to go and the m5a97 is very poor at that, plus the power phases are low. I say it's worth it. If you want my BIOS setup please ask, you can have it. Like I said, I've done 3 of these, and 2 of the FX6300's.
