Building a computer from scratch, motherboard is the next thing I buy

All I have right now is the case. I'm buying a motherboard next week. I plan to use this computer for programming and using Maya. My budget limit is $400.

I want to get something from ASUS, because I heard they make good motherboards. On the official site I see they have 4 brands, with 3 sub types, but I don't know what the difference is between them.

Is 400 your budget for the Motherboard? Depending on how important it is to you, and your overally Pc budget, I'd look at an x79 chipset motherboard, or z87 chipset. Either socket 2011 or 1150. More than likely though, you'll want a socket 1150 unless spending 500+ on a Cpu doesn't bother you.

Nevermind. I see there's more motherboards, but just 4 on the main site that are advertised as the mains.
