Hard Drive Screeching

I have no idea why this is happening, but a loud screeching sound is coming from my hard drive. I've had my computer about a year and I noticed the screeching sound shortly after I got it, however I thought it was a fan, and it would usually stop soon after booting. However, I no longer think it's a fan, from what I can tell it's from the hard drive, and now it no longer stops after booting. I have to smack the top of my tower (not that hard lol) to get it to stop, but it's usually for a little bit and then it starts up again. I have no idea what to do with it. Do I need to just get a new hard drive? I'd hate to have to go through that hassle, but I guess I have to do what I have to do. Anyone have any ideas?

Solution
try unplugging the power to it, if no screeching, then that's prob it, if so ensure the drive is securely installed in the bay, prob 4 screws and that they are snug, but not overly tight, the drive is a sealed enclosure and to much pressure from the screws can affect the pressure inside and possibly throw the platters off a bit

Solution
First, make a backup of you data, now. Unless you don't care if you lose anything on the system. Then make sure where the noise is coming from, it could be a fan if you don't track down the noise exactly. Open the case, you will be able to narrow it down a lot more. You can also stop a fan with a pen or something (for a very short time ofcourse especially on the CPU fan) and see if the noise goes away.
