I currently own a prebuilt PC with an amd fx6100 cpu that I'm planning to upgrade to an fx8350. I was wondering if when upgrading cpus if any changes to BIOS are required or possible software changes in able for windows to recognize the new cpu? Or is it simple as popping it in, slapping on the thermal paste and hooking up the cooler?

Solution
Ok

Your motherboards 4 +2 Phase Power Design might be a limiting factor if you decide to overclock your AMD FX-8350. That being said you're going to need the 1605 BIOS or newer version as you can see here. You can verify the version by entering your computer BIOS or looking at the loading screen of your PC. You can also try CPUID. If your motherboard is supported the version will show up under the Mainboard tab as seen here:

The ASUS m5a97 it has an AM3+ socket.

*I also have a 750w psu that should be more than enough to power the fx8350 and my single radeon hd 7870 even if I'm planning to do crossfire in the future.

Wow ok ,I had that excact CPU and motherboard and upgraded to that CPU! Asus M5A97 EVO(better power delivery) with 6100. Stable but wouldn't overclock passed 4.2ghz. Bought a 8350 wouldn't overclock passed 4.3 without throttling and also doesn't fully support the HT speed....eventually got fed up and bought a 990FX sabertooth. can hit around 4.7ghz before my cooler cant handle it anymore. So basically it will work stock speed but you wont get barely any headroom for overclocking. You need powerful VRMs and cooling. With that being said in benchmarks I got a nice improvement,, but for games not really noticeable. I gave my 6100 to my GF and we have identical videocards; 7870XT, and games are practically identical on both systems.
