Hiho, I just bought Acer GD245HBD (ET.FG5HE.011) which was supposed to have 75-80hz refresh rate but I can't set it even on 1280x1024 (native is 1920x1280) I'm using vga-dvi adapter (as the monitor came with vga cable and i have dvi radeon card). My eyes hurt after using the computer after an hour or two now. Any solution to this other than buying a new monitor i can't afford? :(

Solution
I would suggest you try a DVI cable , using a cheap adapter would almost certainly limit the performance , there are some dvi-vga adapters that are capable of going higher than 1280X1024 , but its equally likely that it may be a cheaper one which does not handle this particularly well.

As for the refresh rate , what O.S are you using , if its XP i remember something many moons ago about the refresh rate being defaulted at 60hz for XP you would need to use either the monitors driver software , or you GPU's software to bring this up.

If that's an LCD monitor, set it at 60mhz. LCD monitors don't have any flicker due to a low refresh rate like the CRT monitor's did. Your eye strain issue is not caused by this. If you want to have better quality, use a DVI cable instead of the VGA converter, it may not help with your exact issue but will get you the best possible image.

They do flicker - it's just less visible (or not at all) for people with healthy eyes I guess and it's not as bad as in crt monitors. Though yesterday my eyes were watery and red after using it for several hours :/ If they won't want to take it back, I'll try the dvi cable.. thanks.

Take a look at this, halfway down about LCD and refresh rate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refresh_rate . If there is a flicker, it's not due to the refresh rate. They only flicker would be if there was a bad quality cable, video card or monitor, if the backlight was not even for example.

If you have issues with looking at monitors, get a good IPS based LCD monitor insead of the cheaper TN based monitor. Dell UltraSharp series are very good, and you can find the older models on sale often.

As said, LCD's do not flicker, unless you are counting the CFL or LED backlighting, which has nothing to do with refresh rate.

Also, 75hz is not an option at 1080p. In order to get 75hz, you need to try a lesser resolution. I know 720p usually accepts it when they say it is an option, which is lower than the resolution you tried. As other have suggested, it may also require a DVI-D cable for that to work, and if that is the case, a converter will not work.
