Hi!

I want to build/buy a server for home/small business use.

Right now I have a Qnap TS869 Pro NAS which runs Qnap's heavily modified version of BusyBox and and has RAID 5+1 with 6 WD Red drives.

Besides the Qnap, I have a HP Proliant ML110 G6 which runs debian wheezy, and is a home/very small business-grade server.

I want to merge these servers into 1 for 3 main reasons:

Power consumption
Ease of use and maintenance
I want to get rid of Qnap's version of BusyBox as it's downright horrible

I think I'm pretty experiened when it comes to IT/hardware in general, but I lack the same experience/knowledge when it comes to server hardware.

Demands to the new server:

Must be somewhat quiet (It's going to be stashed away in my bedroom, and since I like to be able to sleep...)
Must support 8 SATA6 WD Red drives (3TB)
Must support RAID5+1
Must support linux/debian
Must be somewhat power efficient
Network transfer speed-wise it must be at least as fast as my Qnap

What I'm unsure of:

Should I choose RAID or SAN?
Which RAID/SAN card should I buy?
Should I go for a pre-build HP/Lenovo/Dell/whichever server or should I build it myself?
If self-build, what hardware should I buy? Like i5, i7, Xeon, ...? And should I go for specific server hardware?

Any advice regarding to this would be greatly appreciated!

Solution
Get a Intel ITX MB.
http://www.amazon.com/Intel-D2500CCE-Mini-ITX-Motherboard-BLKD2500CCE
Throw in 4GB of RAM
1x 8GB USB pen <-- Your NAS OS
1x SPM394 http://www.amazon.com/Port-Multiplier-SATA-hardware-controller/dp/B004JPHAF0
5x SATA drives create a RAID5+HS

Load Openfiler - Free http://www.openfiler.com/
Or
FreeNAS - http://www.freenas.org/
in 8GB USB pen

Put those is a Mid-side Tower with 300W PSU
You system will BEAT ANY of commercial NAS/iSCSI out there. In the same class, of course
You can use green drive even, if you want to save energy and cost

Here is what I did on my 40TB Server consume 180W of power - http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/265641-32-40tb-server-performance-issue

It may take you about couples hrs to get...
