Asus Rampage Extreme IV – Constant Problems!

Hi everyone, I am turning to you because I have run out of options. I recently switched out my old Asus 1366 board for a 2011 using all the same hardware except for a new 3930K CPU. In my previous build I had no problems whatsoever with any of the hardware, none.

However, when I installed the new mobo I had a nightmare getting it to load Windows 7 (error 0X80075070) for which Microsoft was no real help. Then, after I did get windows loaded it has been a continouos series of crashes such as “program has stopped working.”

I have a single Crucial M4 plugged into the Sata3 port which never gave me any trouble on my previous computer.

I have run every diagnostic test there is on all the hardware and I can’t find any problems with the RAM, SSD, GPU, CPU, etc.

My question is, do you think I just ended up with a bad mobo?

Thank you very much.

My setup:
Asus Rampage Extreme IV
Intel i7 3930K
16gb 1866 DDR3 Corsair Platinum (at 1333)
SSD Crucial M4 512
EVGA 590X
Corsair AX 1200W

Hi,

A few questions:

1) Are you attemptng a fresh install of the OS or trying to BOOT the install from your X58 board?

2) Update UEFI to the latest version. Check which version your board has, it will be on the serial number sticker (suffix) or you can check within UEFI in the ADvanced>CPU config section I think. Check which version it is and then update by using a FAT32 formatted drive in a USB 2.0 port (USB BIOS flashback port is preferred). If you board shipped with an old UEFI build that has a .ROM suffix, you may need to perform CAP conversion first.

3) If this is a fresh install of the OS and updating UEFI does not help, load XMP for the memory modules and configure once againto DDR3-1333 just to rule out any instability on the memory side.

4) Check if there are any firmware updates fo your SSDs and apply those before installing the OS.

I was trying for a fresh install after I cleared all the partitions, but I kept getting that error code.

I did update the BIOS to latest version but I didn't check if it was ROM or CAP. I will do so.

I did extensive memtest and there are no problems with the RAM.

Firmware for SSD has been updated but there are still problem crashes.

Thank you.

Not heard of this before. You did say you have the drive plugged into a SATA 3 port - just confirming it is plugged into one of the black SATA ports, correct?

Do you have a spare HDD you can use to debug? I'd remove the SSD, and just try the HDD on one of the black SATA ports.

This is a long shot, and you may have tried already - make sure you use one of the SATA cables tat came with the board. I have heard of some of the generic SATA cables having issues with some of these SSDs at times.

If it's not that, I'm a bit stumped - not seen this stop code before. Memtest does not catch all errors (it's good but not perfect), so that still irks me a bit.

I've serached the web and the cases I did find with this issue turned up to be startup repair related (possibly MBR) issues which should not apply to you.

Hi, it is plugged into the black port. I also tried another HDD I had and I keep getting crashes. I am using the cables I got with the board.

I am going to refit my old Mobo tonight just to make sure it's not any of the other hardware although everything was working fine with the old build.

Yeah, try a bare minimum install ad see what happens. I cant think of much else. I'd even try the Intel SATA 6 ports (not ASmedia) just to debug as well and use a single memory module with XMP and DDR3-1333 just to eliminate that from the mix entirely. Assuming UEFI is updated to latest of course.
