Could my i5 3570K be faulty? (Or my P8Z77-V mboard or OCZ ZT 650 PSU?)

Hi.

I know it sounds really unlikely but could the PC lock-ups/freezes I've been having recently be caused by my i5 3570k processor, motherboard or PSU being faulty???

I have been experiencing serious issues recently on the system I built using the new components bought this time last year.

I am running an intel core i5 3570K on an Asus P8z77-V. My PSU is an OCZ ZT 650W and the memory is 4x4Gb Corsair Vengeance 2133mhz PC17000. I experience the issue described here at stock speeds with no overclocking whatsoever and temperature is fine. Motherboard settings are at optimised defaults...

System was fine to begin with but started to randomly crash/freeze every now and then a few months ago (no BSOD, just complete freeze with corrupted/garbled screen on the display powered by the i3570K gpu/ HD4000). It has become more and more frequent and now it's daily - sometimes up to 7 times a day, completely random when cpu is under no stress. I can't tell you the amount of time I have lost and problems this has caused while I'm trying to work as a web/graphic designer! So I really am desperate to solve the issue. My instinct is to believe the symptoms are likely those of a hardware issue but the fact it seems OK in safe mode is a little puzzling.

So, I have painstakenly attempted to troubleshoot the problem over the last few weeks and months, removing the SSDs (my first suspicion), removing my discrete gpu (Geforce 8600GT), testing RAM (all OK), removing PCI firewire card, etc. and having eliminated most possibilities to no avail - Unfortunately I still get these daily (incredibly frustrating) random freezes /lock-ups with all these components physically removed.

The event log gives no clue as to what is causing the issue. Just a standard critical error after an unexpected power down. It really is random. However, strangely, the crashes do seem to happen less frequently when a Standard VGA Driver is installed instead of any one of the HD4000 Intel drivers or the nVidia Geforce drivers (so only one screen enabled). However, they DO still occur a couple of times a day.

As I say, I don't think it's a driver problem but could I be wrong? What do you think? Can drivers cause the system to completely freeze up with no BSOD/event log? I'm now thinking the root of the problem could be the motherboard, CPU or PSU now. I know it's unlikely to be any of these but what else can it be?? I suspect the CPU (if so I will obviously need a replacement) but would really appreciate any ideas/suggestions you may have. So far I've probably shaved a few years off my life thanks to the stress this has caused me so you could literally be saving my life!

I would eliminate software as a culprit by using a known good HDD/SSD with a fresh install of the OS & your professional aps. If the problem still occurs you will need to replace suspected items one at a time to narrow it down.

After running CCleaner and AVG Tuneup and updating all device drivers the system is still crashing/freezing as before ). There is no malware or viruses so stumped once again.

I reinstalled Windows 8 fresh (twice) all updates, newest drivers etc. etc. - thought everything was OK after no crashes for a couple of days. I therefore installed all my other applications inc. music software, graphics etc., all updates and settings etc. (took 4 days!) Then suddenly another crash/freeze up same as I was having before – happened in both profiles today. So, after exhausting all software/driver possibilities over the last few weeks, I have now had to resort to ordering a new i5 3570K cpu to test. I will report back if it still crashes or if the chip was the culprit (not holding much hope but has to be done as process of elimination)...

I received the new i5 3570k but haven't opened it (hopefully won't have to!) I think I found the cause of the problem: running my 16gb Corsair Vengeance at 2133mhz! (No memory errors were ever found but I just don' think the 3570k or P8z77-v are happy at 2133mhz (100/133 Dram speed ratio). Changed to 1600mhz 100:100 and seems to be running fine now. Also found 4.3ghz is top my cpu will do at 1.26v. Been fine for 48 hrs now... fingers crossed!
