Recently my laptop was having trouble whilst booting up. I can't recall what the error message was exactly but for some reason while booting the laptop would not recognise the drive with windows installed, so every time I would turn the laptop on, I would press esc while booting up and select 'windows boot manager', which seemed to fix the problem.

I then thought I could fix the problem permanently by entering bios and changing the boot order and changed it so 'windows boot manager' was number 1 on the boot order. However, when I go to turn the laptop on, the screen now stays black! The power button lights up, I can hear the hard drive working, and I know the screen isn't broken.

I think I could fix the problem by entering bios and resetting the settings but I can't see because the screen is blank! Can anyone help??

Solution
Asus were unable to provide a home cure so laptop had to go back. Turnaround was quite quick received seven days after sending with no charge or carriage costs as still under warranty. Consignment note just referred to "Recovered BIOS". I would like to know how to do that myself as I now wonder if boot up fails again will my warrenty have run out or will I have to do a PC refresh and loose all my programs again.
Try to take out the laptop battery and the CMOS battery. Wait for few minutes than put those back in. See how it works. You can also reseat the RAM to work. If you get the display than go to BIOS and change the settings to default.

After that you can also repair the startup option of OS with a bootable media.

Same problem here, same laptop. In my case restart after deleting Epson software instead of starting Windows 8 screen came up with "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key"; This also happened about three months ago (laptop is now six months from new). On that occassion I was able to get into and look at BIOS but not confident enough to do anything; one of the f keys got me to Windows recovery Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - Automatic Repair did not correct the boot issue but Refresh your PC did but, of course, I lost all my programs. This time I went into BIOS and noticed that first Boot Option was no longer Windows which I think is what happened before. I chose a windows option from a list on the right, saved it and now laptop won't boot at all or go to anything with f keys - just a black screen. My PC is still under warrenty so I will describe issue to ASUS support and let you know what they say. In meantime if you've got a fix, please post here. Geoff

Exactly the same here.

I was having trouble in the reboot process. I normally left Windows hibernating, but from time to time (updates, etc), I had to reboot. In these times, the hard drive was not recognized and the computer wanted to start from the network card. I belive that hard-rebooting it solved the issue. Then one night, not even hard-rebooting it made it wanting to start from the drive, and I went into the BIOS to try to see/reset anything. Saving the boot order killed the laptop and now I am waiting for repair. Sad story.

I bought it from Ebay UK.

Hi Michael,
I've recently had the exact same problem as you with the ASUS K55VD. I had the issue around 6 months ago and I changed the BIOS and set Windows Boot Loader to the first boot device and everything was fine. It then happened again a few days ago. The message came up when the laptop restarted itself after installing some windows updates. It came up with the pxe boot failed message again. I did the same thing as before and changed the BIOS to set windows as 1st boot device, it then restarted to a black screen and nothing happens. Did you ever find a solution to the problem as I really need my laptop? I've tried taking the CMOS battery out for a while but it's still just the same. I'm sure it's an issue with the BIOS but now the screen is blank I can't do anything. Please help!?
Thank you

same problem here with k55vd, great laptop but poor asus support,

after changing a bios parameter and saving i get the black screen, i've tried a bios recovery:

1. remove cmos battery for a few minutes (just unscrew all visible screws and open carefully housing with the help of a credit card)
2. remove battery, hd and dvd
3. format a usb pen drive to FAT and copy the asus bios file: K55VDAS.411, make 2 more copy of the same file and rename to AMIBOOT.ROM and K55VDAS.BIN
4. insert usb pen drive on right connector and AC from power supply
5. press <ctrl><home> and <switch on>, keep there for 2 secs. you will see usb pen drive activity
6. in 2-3 minutes bios should be recovered

this doesn't work on my laptop but there is pen drive activity (light flashes for a few secs.), so i think i'm not providing the right file names in pen drive,

i've tried with asus tech support with no help, they don't answer and there's no docs. about bios recovery from usb

Hi Roberto
I'm still having the same problem. I've followed the procedure that you mentioned and the same thing happens to my laptop. When starting with <ctrl><home> I get a few flashes from the usb stick but still the blank screen.
I've followed the guide at
http://www.biosflash.com/e/bios-boot-usb-stick.htm
and
http://www.dfi.com.tw/DFI-Lanparty/support/forum/faq_en.html
to create a bootable usb but still the same.
Did you manage to find a way of getting it to flash the bios?
Thanks

Hello. Problems with defective Asus bios chip repair by replacing regularly. It's an hour and repaired at a fraction of the money than the Asus service. Have a nice day. georgin@email.cz

Same thing happen to me k55vd , tried all these recovery 'solutions' none worked . Screen stays black , it runs but doesn't do anything . Thought first it might be the screen , nope . BIOS fail...

I mean the solution for sure is to replace the BIOS chip but , for a guy with no experiance on bios programming or soldering this isn't a solution *It might take up 200$+ to repair it in a shop* so i guess , there isn't a real solution.

If someone came up with a recovery (easy and cheap enough) to perform please write it as a answer.
