I just recently acquired a "like new" GTX 295 co-op edition and I am so disappointed in the performance. What I am asking here is, is the card defective or is my system not strong enough to power this beast?

My Specs:
Everything at stock speeds no OC.

ASRock H77M motherboard
Core i3 2120 stock cooler
4Gb G.Skill Trident 2000mhz ddr3
EVGA GTX 295 Co-op
Raidmax RX-730SS psu
2x 320GB HDD
DVD/CD burner
3 120mm Case Fans

More about : gtx 295 performing

Depending on what you are playing or doing on your computer, I wouldn't imagine that the GTX 295 would show you great much less decent performance regardless. The card is very outdated and probably can't push what it is you are doing.

Need more details here, if you expect it to run Crysis 3 on Max settings at 1900 resolution with 100 FPS you'll be dissapointed because it won't. I would not agree that the card is outdated, older maybe, it's like saying a 2010 Porche 911 is outdated because it's a few years old. It will run many things very well, but you do need to provide a lot more detail in why you think it's not running well. Did you compare benchmarks between your system and other systems with your video card and CPU?

i just installed it and ran a few stress tests like furmark and fluidmark and it does worse than my trusty gtx 285. btw this system is just a secondary system i use at work and i want it to be good but not to expensive. i picked up the 295 for only 60 bucks. and i am running a 1920x1080 single monitor and play just a few games like bioshock 2, fallout 3 and command and conquer 4.

I guess it wasn't "like new"

Each GPU effectively has only 896MB to work with. When you game on it, you'll need slightly lower settings to accommodate for that. Interms of how much rendering grunt it has, it should come pretty close to the 7850 or GTX650 Ti Boost (it was ~5% behind the GTX480 at the time).

I know that it is an old gpu, and it is not brand new, but i know the previous owner and he never had any problems with it. he just upgraded to a 660 and i took this one off his hands. so with all that aside. why is this card not performing like it should is it my power supply not supplying enough amperage?

To make sure we're compairing the same things, you are running this new card in the same system with the same benchmark program versions as the 285 you used? Did you run the same benchmarks on both cards now? If not, run them both back to back and see how they do.

295 should be at least 20% faster than a 285 all other things being equal.

I just don't understand why this card is performing so poorly, even though it is and older card it should be able to blaze through fluidmark and furmark. With settings at only high and no AA, Heaven benchmark only shows 20-24 fps at best. This card should out perform even my GTX 560Ti i have in another build but it doesn't. What the heck?

Are you testing the same computer? If not, do that. Do not run the card in a different PC and compare the results.

I have used the same pc and a differnt pc to do theses tests. I have tested a GTX 285 GTX 560Ti and the GTX 295 so I am thinking I just wasted my money on the 295.....I have even used 3 different power supplies.

Could this be an issue with amp draw from the power supplies I am using? The GTX 295 needs a min of 46 amps. The power supplies i have been using to test all have more than 46 amps but they all are multi-rail power supplies and none of the rails have more than 32a alone.

Unless it's bottlenecked by the CPU and RAM, the card should be faster. If there any faster computer you can test it in? That's why they benchmark cards on overclocked high-end CPUs for the most part, to make sure the video card is reaching up to the capabilities of the PC, not bumping against the limits of it. It could be your i3 CPU.

If the i3 was causing a bottleneck I would see the same issues with the 560Ti and even the GTX 285 but I don't. only the 295 is lacking. now here is the power supply i am using as of right now.

Thermaltake TR2-600W even though it is 80 watts short of what nVidia says i should use with the 295, I have seen several forums where the Total System wattage draw was less than 525 watts using an i7 oc'd and other more power hungry ram and cooling components than what i am running.

That's what makes me question the amps. My psu has 2 12v rails,+12v1=32A and +12v2=24A. is that enough amps to provide power to the 295?

If you had power issues with the card, it would more likely lock up the system, not cause it to perform at a slower speed. It may underclock it as protection, you should be able to see that with CPU-Z or another utility that will give you the current clock speeds not just the specs of the card.

I have since gotten rid of the GTX295 and saved my pennies for my awesome Gigabyte GTX 770 4Gb Windforce Edition. The 295 was just a faulty card. Thank you guys for all the help. I am done with this thread and it can be closed.
