Hey guys,

I am looking to upgrade an old phenomII/4870 system. I have $750 to spend, but I can stretch it out to $800 if it's worth it. I have all the peripherals, the SSD/HDD, a good 550W PSU, an ok cpu cooler, and a 1680x1050 display (will upgrade later in the year).

I am looking to upgrade the mobo, cpu, gpu, and memory. I will at some point moderately overcloak the CPU. I will not ever do SLI/crossfire. This will be my mobo/cpu/gpu upgrade for at least the next 3 years.

Right now I am looking at a rig with gtx770 and i5-3570k. Since I will not do SLI, I would really like the community to recommend a good smaller form mobo (i.e. a cheaper mobo without too many extra bells and whistles) that would allow me to comfortably overcloak the cpu. I am fairly set on the gpu, unless there is a good deal on a 7970 somewhere. As far as the CPU goes, I know there is somewhat of an argument whether to to go 1155 or 1150, but I figure that by the time I am doing my next upgrade in 3-3.5 years both of the these (and AM3+ too, AMD supporters) will be outdated, so I should just go with the cheaper option in 3570k. I am not particularly worried about memory, an 8gb kit with standard performace would suffice I think.

This computer will be used purely for gaming.

Thanks all!

ah, and I am using newegg for this

Solution
Asrock Extreme 4(~$130), Intel i5-3570k(~$220), GTX770(~$400). Basically the same as your parts. The Extreme 4 is a really good OC motherboard and is at reasonable price. The total would average around $750. I would rather go for a Haswell/Z87 build since you are planning to last it for 3 years. It would just be around ~$40 more than the current IB CPUs/Z77.

Solution
not going to fit a 770 into your price range, can barely fit a 7970 into it.

hate to tell you OP but you're not getting an overclockable i5 and a 770 combo for $750-$800
i5-3570k -- $210
gtx 770 -- $400
RAM -- $65
is $675

That leaves $75-125 for a mobo. A budget Asrock for $80-90 would bring my total to $755-765. How is it not possible? I am not looking to push 4.5Ghz, as I said - I will at some later point mildly overcloak it.

Don't you have an AM3 motherboard?

Ah, thank you so much for the post, but as I reamarked in my OP, as well in the post above, I only need gpu-cpu-mobo-ram. I got everything else (I go the case too, forgot to mention in OP). This is not an entirely new build.

Thanks all, went with 3750k, asrock extereme4 + free 8gb ram, and gtx770. Haswell might have been a better choice, but the free memory alone is $73, so just went with it. Microcenter has some good deals too, thanks for pointing that out, but with newegg I am not paying tax and shipping. Thanks again, good advice.

It is all a balance. Now that you have created a beautiful build, please consider the program below.

Folding@Home is a distributed computing system, which uses your unused computer power to research the mechanics and aim for the cure to diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's. If you own a high end computer system, you can contribute to this greatly by downloading the program, and letting it run calculations. Please at least check out the home link. http://folding.stanford.edu/

Moral Charity aside.this program can be used to measure the capability of your system. You earn points for every Work Unit you complete, and you can compare your points, or points per day, with other performance enthusiasts. Please take a look at Tom's official forum, and say hi if you want. We would love to have you join the team. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1580785/folding-home-thgc-team-40051/page-173.html
