8GB of Ram enough for now, but what about the future?

Ok, so I decided to order a new computer and its customized. I have been notified that they are likely to have a shortage on ram(due to high demand) and this leaves me with 2 choices, go with the basic 8GB or wait for possibly another 1-2 weeks while they get more in so I can get the full 12GB I wanted.(or spend $100+ on a different brand which I am not doing) I could install more ram myself, but I find it to be a hassle with making sure all the characteristics match whats already there.

Why do I want 12GB when 8GB is currently plenty? Well I plan on having the computer for another 5 years or so.

My question is this: In the next 5 years, how possible is it that I will need more than 8GB of ram? (nope, wont be using a page file got a SSD as well)

The first major 64bit games(Planetary Annihilation recommends 64bit) are starting to appear now and this will only grow in the next few years.

For anyone that was curious, I like to have computers that last a while, I dont want to have to go out and buy a new one every other year. My current computer is 5 years old and it has only started to really show its age in the last year.

Edit: I plan to use this for gaming(if mentioning games wasnt enough) while I also do picture editing(for making textures) its not a heavy duty thing.(although I do own a dslr camera that takes 18mp pictures but have yet to do tons of stuff with them)

If thinking 12GB, would just go 16GB in a 2x8GB config, and for lasting purposes (if in the budget) go to a higher freq, depending on what CPU/mobo you are thinking, guessing a Intel K model , so might look to 2133 or even higher

Well, 8GB of memory is more than enough for now. You are able to run almost all the softwares with 8GB but running memory intensive tasks might be little slower so only in that case go with 16GB or 32GB (future proof). The upcoming softwares are more memory centric than what we are using, so more memory is better.
