CPU/fan running hot when idle?

i recently upgraded my old compy from an i3-350m to an i5-540m(was limited to what the motherboard could accept). ever since then i get a lot of fan noise and CPU heat when the machine is idling. i havent been able to find any sort of software to record what is using the CPU and when, so i don't know if its a program running in the background or what. CoreTemp told me i hit 192/194 today, while i was at work and the computer was home alone lol.

does anybody have any suggestions on how i can figure out whats causing the CPU to work so hard while its idle?

Solution
the thermal paste didnt spread enough, or the heatsink wasnt tightened down good enough and is not making contact, usually the cause of high temps with a new cpu. Also could in general be the cpu but prob not

With no heatsink on the cpu most cpus will actually overheat on just idle so its prob not actually working that hard

Well the problem with that solution is that it doesn't run hot/loud when I'm actually using the computer, as long as I'm not straining it. I've been away from it for an hour or so now and I can currently hear the fan speeding up

That's actually what reminded me to check this thread lol

didnt think of that. running now.

FYI: over the last hour or so while i was away the cpu temp varied between a low of 129/133 to a high of 187/187. the only thing running was coretemp, task manager and AOL IM.

unfortunately formatting is not really an option.

i had problems with my PC booting into windows with my external storage attached, despite the boot order i would set in the BIOS. like an idiot, i disabled Legacy USB support. since my computer is a fairly modern micro all-in-one, i have no internal optical drive nor PS2 support, so therefore i have no access to the BIOS now lol.

i just keep a cloned SSD in my drawer in case my current SSD fails...
