Hey guys so just a few hours ago i was playing DayZ and my computer suddenly shut off. Once it rebooted, the message on the screen said that there was a power surge from my power supply. I'm not sure if its the motherboard or its my power supply.

My Specs:
- ASUS P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77
- Intel Core i5-3470 Ivy Bridge 3.2GHz
-MSI R7770-2PMD1GD5/OC Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX
- COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus RR-B10-212P-G1
- Thermaltake Toughpower XT TPX-675M 675W ATX 12V v2.3 / EPS 12V v2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

I wouldn't recommend it if it only happened once.

It's entirely possible that you did experience a power surge and everything worked properly to protect your hardware.

I'd just consider it to be a one time event until proven otherwise.

You may need a new power supply. How much are you willing to spend on it? We can suggest some models.

For example:

And, Pinhedd, the Thermaltake Toughpower series is a good power supply series. Granted ThermalTake aren't known for reliability in all their PSU offerings, but this particular PSU is a quality PSU.

Not necessarily - I read on here a couple days ago courtesy of ko888
that some Asus boards are "too sensitve" with regard to the detceting
power surge feature.

Rather than just replacing the PSU outright, a better path might be to
disable that feature in BIOS (as other users have done), and monitor
the system.

There are some lesser quality Thermaltake PSU's out there, but the toughpower
675 you have appears to be a solid unit. Built by CWT, and tho no trusted reviews
of it, the 775 also built by CWT has several very good reiviews.

I wouldn't trash the PSU until you try the mobo BIOS adjustment other users
of ASUS boards have done.

cause this happened to me about 3 times in the past 2 hours. I just want to be sure if its either my mother board or my psu. I bought this psu last november so idk if its failing on me.

On the balance of probabilities I would put my money on a Thermaltake PSU failing long before an Asus motherboard.

No - since this is not a rare occurrence with ASUS boards, you need to disable that
feature in BIOS, the TT toughpower PSU's unlike many TT PSU's are actually OK.

I don't believe this is the PSU, it's a quirk that has been happening with ASUS boards.

Please read conclusion page from Hardware Secrets.

Okay thank you. After i disable the feature how will i know if its still surging. (If the problem is actually the psu)

A couple of things - if your system is running OK & game play is ok, that BIOS adj was
probably all that was needed. If you have a reliable HW monitoring tool (most free ones don't
work well) then you will see out of whack #'s on the readout. (speedfan & HW info are
amongst those that do not work).

If your PSU is really out of whack, it's own internal protections will shut it down.

Please read the conclusion page of the HW Secrets review, this is actually a decent
PSU, certainly not like the TR2's etc.

Thank you! I just have one more question. Can you recommend a hardware monitoring tool?

Hi again - I'm looking now, most do not work. I'm trying to fond the one ko888 uses, it's not free tho.

Will post it here when I find it.

Here's a free one that's supposed to work OK:
