My friend gave me his desktop he built himself last week, however it doesn't have wireless capabilities and I live on the 6th floor of an apartment building with free wifi. I was hoping I could buy a wireless adapter and use their wifi (I use it on my laptop) instead of the hassle with buying a router and internet service. I don't know the specifics of the comp right now other than it has xp, and was curious as to whether or not there are specific kinds of adapters i need to search for or if they're all generic and will work with any tower. . . let alone 6 floors up.

Get AC/a/b/g/n wifi

for internal , this is your best choice :

ASUS PCE-AC66, 1300Mbps

I dont recommend USB external one...

no, 15-20$ adaptors are not crap, they are infact better than most of the inbuilt adaptors that laptops have, if this guy is using a laptop, i dnt understand why he needs 100$ 1000+mbps !!!!, those are used for offices, or homes with full hd streaming or 10 wifi clients.
300mbps shud be enuf i think.

because of the RANGE and the Obstacles effect and strong signal in other rooms.... not only the DATA RATE ...

when you know nothing about it dont give false advice.

and by the way , all ALL new notebooks and tablets are coming with AC/a/b/g/n wifi .

example : Samsung Galaxy S4 phone
among specs :

EVEN PHONES HAVE IT !!!

Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac

sure if you got money the most expensive one is the best xD.
300mbps is quite enuf for watever range and obstacles. and for a/b/g/n, i m sure the network he is connecting to does not even have 802.11a ready lol.
