This is my plan: I buy a workstation Nvidia Quadro GPU, but I have a fine HD5870 that I want to use for some gaming. I read that I can set them both up on a single motherboard as long as I am using windows XP or windows 7. Once I can get the two GPU's on the same motherboard, I hope to hook Quadro to a 10bit, 1.07billion color depth, monitor so I can utilize the 10bit color depth for digital imaging. Then I will hook another monitor to my HD5870 for casual stuff, some gaming.

The problem is that I read that you need to mod your GPU to be able to do this,

but other places I read it's okay as long as you have windows 7.

I am guessing the mod is not required? Can someone confirm this? Is there anything wrong or flawed with my plan above? Does something need to be tweaked?

I am still on Windows Vista, and will upgrade to 7 soon after this confirmation.

It is possible to do with some research, but you need to disregard that Hybrid PhysX article on physxinfo.com. That is a different topic (setting up a dedicated PhysX card).

Yea, I did some research, but got mixed results. Some say it won't work great and advised against it, some say it "should work", and some say it won't work. These all refer to different graphics cards. I also read you need a motherboard with Lucid Hydra Chip. Here are just two links:

The only ones who said the dual ati and nvdia gpu work well were those who used physx mod.

That's pretty much what my research turned up. Very little in the way of "how to" set it up. Most seemed to say that the AMD card should be primary with the drivers installed first, then the Nvidia card.

There was one Tom's Hardware thread where user "Jaguarskx" seemed to know a little. Maybe it's worth it to private message him.
