I made a system image of my computer on windows 8 before I had to send it in to get work done. Now that I got I back I am trying to restore the system image. I have tried to boot into the advanced startup options and restore it from there but it tells me that I need to boot from a windows installation disk. When I try to boot from the disk I have it doesn't bring up the option to do so. The I decided that I would just mount the hard drive images and just move the files over. When I try to mount it, it doesn't do anything. It doesn't give me an error or make a noise or anything. Then if I try to mount it again it says that it is already mounted. My questions is either how do I boot from the installation disk or how do I mount the drives. Thanks in advance!

Solution
The hold shift and press restart option should work for you as it modifies the same boot files that would normally boot Windows 8.

Otherwise, you may also need to use the boot device selection menu from within your system firmware. Often this can be the F10 or F12 keys, but the key to select the boot menu varies from one system (or motherboard) to another. From this menu, select either your optical drive to boot the disk or the USB device for boot.

If you have standard installation media, when you boot to it, confirm your language settings, then select Repair your computer. Select Troubleshooting, then Advanced Options. System Image Recovery should appear as an option on the following screen.

Alternatively you could create a new Recovery Drive. Enter Create Recovery Drive at the start screen and select the Settings category, then select Create a recovery drive. The utility can be used to create a recovery drive alone, or to create a recovery drive which also contains the recovery partition if your system was configured with one. The utility can create either optical media or bootable USB media.

Lastly, by holding the Shift key when pressing Restart to restart the machine from within Windows 8 the system will restart to the Advanced Boot Options. The Advanced Boot Options include Troubleshooting and by extension System Image Recovery.

The problem with that is that whether I am using a standard installation disk or recovery drive on a flash drive I don't have the option to boot from it. My computer just starts up on windows 8.

I selected the optical drive from the boot menu and that worked but when I tried to restore the system image it got to the end and then said "Failed to restore system image". After that the computer wouldn't even boot into windows because it failed after windows was deleted. The I decided to just reinstall the operating system and not use the system image. I had a separate drive with my important files so I didn't really lose anything except programs which I can just install again. Thanks for the help anyway!
