I have a seagate hard drive, which gets listed in "My Computer" when connected to the PC, however the system freezes when I try to access its contents.
I tried to format it using Disk Utility on Linux, but it gives the following error: "wipefs: error: /dev/sdb1: probing initialization failed"...
Command line tools like fsck, fdisk, badblocks give the following msg: "No such device or address while trying to open /dev/sdb1"

Please Help.

Solution
You can try reading the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive to see what is wrong with it,

http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

Try a different cable or try it in a different port.
Try removing the drive from it's external enclosure (if it's an external drive) and plugging it into the motherboard directly.
This should point you in the direction of what exactly is wrong with the drive and what needs to be replaced.
(Simple answer, it's time for a new drive.)
