i recently upgraded my graphics card, a 6670 to a 7850

old 1: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102988

new 1: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131473

But when i turn it on with the new 1 my monitor stays blank.
(specifically when i plug in the 6-pin external power cable into it, if i don't plug it in it turns on. idk if that helps)

  • tried my old card and it works (i did uninstall the old 1 in Device Management before trying the new one)

tried updating my bios (to "MS-a08" for the Dell Inspiron 620), didn't work

tried disabling internal graphics first, didn't work

my Specs:

  • incase i miss something (http://www.samsclub.com/sams/dell-inspiron-620-desktop-intel-core-i5-2310-1tb-24-lcd/prod3690233.ip)

    Dell Inspiron 620 motherboard
    intel Core i5-2310
    8 gb ram
    Antec 620w PSU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371031)
    3TB hardrive

Any ideas or help on what i could try / do?

i know the card just might be faulty (hope not) but the fan works when i turn it on if that's any indication.

this is a common guestion, so sorry for asking it again, this is just frustrating is all

Try from DOS.
Create bootable USB drive using Rufus:
http://rufus.akeo.ie/
Make sure to use this settings:
MBR scheme for BIOS or UEFI,
FAT32, default cluster size,
quick format,
create bootable disk using MS-DOS (not the freeDOS!),
create extended label and icon files.
After it gets created, copy the MS-A10.exe to the USB drive.
Boot from this drive. In the DOS prompt type MS-A10.exe and press enter. When it will ask update bios? press y.

thank you, i was able to update it to ms-A10 (1 problem solved). But i still can't get the graphics card to work.

i was told changing my boot mode from UEFI to Legacy might work, but i don't have the option in the boot screen to change the mode.

Just to be sure: go to BIOS / Boot Section and switch the boot mode from UEFI to Legacy. Disable the Secure Boot if it is enabled. Also look for CSM (or compatibility or legacy mode) options, if you find something like that enable it.
If there is the 'other options' configuration go there and make sure everything is set properly (this sub-menu may be unavailable until you disable uefi boot and/or secure boot and restart the pc).
I can't give you the exact guidelines because I can't find detailed description of your BIOS.
