Hi so i have built my cousins computer and when i turn it on, the psu fan and gpu fans seem to be turning but the CPU fan spins for a second, then stops. Theres no post, and motherboard speaker beeps. Things like my Optical drive work etc and case leds/fans, but this is the problem. Its gigabyte 970a ds3 mobo , Amd fx 6100 black edtion, 4gb of Ddr3 ram, Asus geforce gtx 550 ti 1gb, 500gb WD blue, and a 500w no name branded PSU that came with the case (35 bucks). Yes, i did use standoffs and almost sure i plugged in all required for the PSU. At first i thought the problem was the PSU so i bought a 500w coolermaster elite series PSU and plugged it in but same problem-(I also got a PSU tester and idk much about psus but the old PSU when plugged in the tester lit up on all of the things but the newer one didnt light up the +5v sectionthingy) . I have tried a different piece of ram from my computer and same results. What i have noticed also is that i can see the slightest of twitching in the cpu fan every 2 seconds or something.I got everything at Frys and i remeber hearing that the CPU was open box. Is it possible it could be the motherboard? CPU? Please respond, because i am on a very tight schedule with my cousin expecting it to be done in the next couple or 2 days (i have the OS ready to be installed). Thanks! This will really help me and take a knife out of my throat and heat. I forgot to add - when i was putting in the CPU for the first time with the heatsink I put it on top, then readjusted lifted off the heatsink and put it the other way.. did i break the bond and should i apply new thermal paste/ is it dry? The computer has just been sitting for more than 2 months!

When you start the computer, note the number and style of beeps, then search on your mobo manual for what that specific beep type means. mobo beeps are there to help you troubleshoot your problem. also try just turning on your system with unplugging all extra stuff like hdds, optical drives, fans, leds. just make sure only your mobo is connected.

I am getting nothing on the screen, no post, no beeps at all, i have done that. AND the cpu fan just turns 1 or twice and then stops and MAYBE slightly of the slightest twitches.

Ok i haven't tried those 2 yet but i will. How do i reset my CPU may i ask, because i have never come across doing that and what does it generally mean if I just have my mobo and cpu together turned on without ram and there are no beeps. *Update- my bad I didn't realised you meant reset CMOS -

also check that your cpu is supported in the current bios installed on your mobo.

this was in there website: "To enable AM3+ AMD FX-Series CPU support, please update your motherboard with the most current BIOS found in your motherboard’s download section. "
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4122#ov

if that is the case, you are out of luck, unless you can get ur hands on a non-fx am3 cpu to update ur bios before installing the newer fx cpu

by reseating your cpu, I mean physically, take your cpu out of the socket, check both the cpu and mobo (especially the pins) for damage and carefully place it back in its place.

if you run ur system without any ram, and you get no beeps, it will most likely be your mobo.

That is strange because in my custom Built PC i am using a 970a ds3 and Amd Fx 6100 / same thing in this build and it runs fine, i have noticed though that this 970a ds3 has different tabs for the PCi-e ports so im guessing there revesion/ versions are different.. does versions/revions exmp. rev. 1.0 , rev. 2. etc. matter.. the 970a ds3 i am using looks like rev. 3 and it says that it supports fx http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4385#ov WAIT NVM i noticed to enable fx thing.. dang

Would you suggest I go out and buy a cheap compatible CPU run it, uprgrade bios, then reinstall the Fx one. DO you agree with that because I dont want to spend some money on another CPU for it not to work, im just thinking to pick any quick, cheap, compatible one up at Frys or Best Buy, any other suggestions would help :) thanks.

that would certainly work, but just to be safe, try to find out the bios installed on the mobo to confirm that it is actually the bios causing the problem. at this point im 90% sure, but you never know. I think if you can find a cheap cpu or something then that's great. also pick up some thermal paste if you don't have any so you can reapply a nice new fresh coat on your fx when its working. good luck:)

Great! But when refering to the other suggestions you suggested (ram and cpu reset), since this CPU is pretty much not supported on the mobo, if i just have it and the mobo with no ram would in not make any beeps / sound diagnostics anyways. ALso woul di just check the manual for the bios version?

yea don't worry about my other suggestions I assumed that the cpu was compatible with the mobo, and the only way to fix it is to update the bios. I doubt the manual would say it. if you go on the website, under the specific motherboard model, it should have a list of all the bioses and it should show which one was release bios

ok look on the mobo and tell me the exact model name and rev #

edit: its actually strange, all revision support the fx6100 from their release bios.....
if you can plz confirm the cpu again

I suggest you do the bios update anyway, im still sure its a bios problem....

Well i mean it says it will only work for the LATEST version of Bios on website, and i guess realease one (which i probably) have is inconpatible.. so

yea just update it and let me know. also check to see the cpu you are buying is supported and you don't end up with another unsupported cpu lol

click on "cpu support list" here:http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4122#dl

Well maybe that, but i meant with the jumper to restore it to factory defaults.

yea sure, not really necessary though, since updating the bios will restore the defaults anyways

Hey again! I was not able to get another CPU today, but i did pick up some thermal paste. I tried your other solution/things and when i just have the mobo with the CPU in and no ram there is a non stop beeping from the speaker (beep beep beep beep beep beep etc etc etc) and the CPU fan starts for a sec and then stops. Whats that say about it?

it says your mobo is most likely okay and not damaged

With that would you say almost completly the problem is with the CPU and mobo via Bios version. - sorry i like to be very sure on everything..

yes, since the mobo is fine, the only other problem may be the cpu, which is very unlikely. As I said before, if you want to be 100% sure, pop the cpu into your own working mobo and if it boots, your problem is just the bios version.

But I think the bios will fix the issue. also, im not sure where you bought the mobo, but try returning the mobo and getting a different one, in case the new one comes with an updated bios, so you don't have to spend extra money for a cpu to update bios.

Ok either way, its the CPU. I found a Amd Sempron 145 being carried at Frys, for 35 bucks, im going to get it and try to fix this once and for all.
