I'm looking to possibly build a new desktop. I would like it to be able to handle some gaming (not crazy gaming like crysis at max settings but I would at least like to be able to play battlefield 3 at medium settings), and do some video editing too. I'm not sure what parts would be the best for this build so can someone give me some suggestions? I can't really go out of the 500-550 range. Or should I just try my luck and buy a used custom built pc off ebay or something? This would be my first build.

$550 is tough. Any extra money you could put toward the GPU would pay off *really* well since, after spending the bare minimum on all other components, I was left with $135 for the video card, and between $150 and $250, there is very good price/performance scaling in terms of FPS. The $250 760 is as far as I would go on this system.

Here is the build I would suggest: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/drewhoo/saved/1WHO
AMD FX-6300
650 Ti Boost
Rosewill Mini Tower
CX 500 PSU
4GB memory
500GB HDD
Windows for $90 (you could get it for $70 with a coupon if you looked around)

It appears that you forgot to include an operating system. Also, why a Z77 chipset for a locked CPU? Seems like overkill.

Again, it will look pretty, but without an OS it will be very difficult to play games. ^.^
