Which thermal solution would be easier to replace

Hey guys,

I'm putting the stock fan on my CPU until I have more time to look into a better one. I have some artic silver 5, but the stock fan comes with a thermal pad on it. I've heard that thermal pads are a pain in the neck to clean off though, so would using the Artic Silver 5 make this thing easier to replace later?

Which should I use, and how do I get the wax off with stuff I have on hand if I decide to go that route?

Solution
Artic silver 5 is better than any paste that comes with a heatsink, so it would be easier to get off, but i've had no problem with pads in the past, just run the PC for a few mins to warm the paste and it comes right off.

To get the paste off, put some rubbing alcohol or some acetone on the paste and let is sit for a few mins, then wipe off and repeat 1-2 more times and the paste should come all off.

Ok then, if it's not that hard then I may well just use the pad. Something about applying the thermal paste makes me nervous, and if I'm going to need to swap out my cooler soon anyway, then I guess I may as well use the pad and save myself a few grey hairs while I'm nervous about the rest of the build anyway.

Thanks, and does anyone have any other tips for when I take that stuff off?

The thermal pad will be fine and probably easier in the long run.

What cpu cooler comes with a thermal pad? I thought they died out years ago?

Oh is there a difference? I thought the the terms just referred to whether it was more like a little stamp or more like a paste :p

Oh dear; showing my true scrooge colours? (never bought a new cooler or cpu in my life).. but it sounds bad to me; The main prob wi TIM is it dries out, and higher viscosity cant be good.
I am using a siver coloured snot called 'super thermal grease ' from yoyotech. It cost 6 quid summat, but the temps are ok on my e6600 .. so try not to laugh. It plays STO o.k. . Thanks for the info, sounds like somebody is cutting costs > anything else.
