Hi, I have a relatively old graphics card in my PC - an ATI Radeon HD5850.

Unfortunately last weekend my PSU fused. I've bought a new PSU but mistakenly only bought one with a single PCI-E connector; my graphics card has two slots for PCI-E connectors.

I've connected my PC up and the fan on the graphics card is spinning round when I turn the power on, but I'm not getting a picture on my screen.

Is this because I need a second PCI-E connector, so my card isn't getting enough power, or is it more likely to mean the card is fried as well?

Both PCIe connectors need to be connected. What brand and model (not just wattage) PSU did you buy? If it is a good one, it may be safe to use an adapter.

If your PSU died like it was supposed to... your GPU should be just fine. You just need to get the right PSU to correctly power your graphics card more than likely.

I just bought a cheap PSU - it's made by a company called Ace. The output is 650-750W on the PCI according to the box.

To be honest, I just ordered what was cheap without really paying attention which has me really annoyed with myself now.

Do you think I can get away with an adaptor, or am I best off returning it and getting a better one?

as a general rule of thumb, one should never buy a PSU only because it is cheap. of course, after making sure it's a well made model, you can go ahead and buy the cheap one. I would return what you got and get a new one from a well known manufacturer such as seasonic, superflower, pc power & cooling, antec, corsair, just to name a few.

this is because even if the one you bought works for now, I can almost guarantee you that when it dies, it won't die like it's supposed to, and probably take the rest of your system down with it (not to mention it's a fire hazard)

That's not a PSU, it's a PSU-shaped object; I'd be surprised if it's good for more than 300W cleanly. It is NOT safe to use an adapter with it, possibly not even to attach to your PC at all if you intend to plug it in. Return it and get a real PSU. Anything built by Seasonic will be good. In addition to their own, they also build for XFX (all), Antec (many), Corsair (high-end, not CX), and PC Power & Cooling.

Thanks, yes I am annoyed with myself. Didn't want to spend a lot of money as the system is old and outdated; planning on building a new one soon.

Kind of just assumed that all PSUs would have 2 PCI-E connectors, which is pretty dumb.

Am I going to have to go for something like this then?

If it's the modular one, yes that's a decent choice.
