This is a gem of a website! Thanks for all you do for we who are just above a "doorknob" in hardware expertise [like me]

I've had boot up power problems for weeks - The PC would load but with "no signal" message on the monitor - the keyboard and mouse wouldn't work either

It has been 3 weeks and many many tries of uplugging everything but my microwave :pt1cable:
In the interim - my phone lines went dead :ouch: and the phone company finally sent a service guy-- and on Tuesday he found broken wires on the main station pole.....geez
OK- phones are fine now --- I thought it was related to my PC issues but he said it was unrelated to powering up the PC

Kept trying and trying -unplugggging and today the PC magically booted up and I'm online!
Avast then wants updating along with other "critical" updates - Avast did a few of them right in the program itsef but my question is that Java and Adobe Flash download updates will require rebooting and now fear the PC may not power back on
Am I to assume that "restart does NOT shut power off?

If it will not- I plan to keep the PC power ON in the event it won't power up again.

Thanks for any help

Thank you - yes I agree there is probably a power issue in the PC- I suppose this requires bringing it to a tech service - or is there any way I can find it myself?

Thanks for your comments
umm.. I might be able to find a video on how to install a new PSU- but not so sure I can do it so will think about that [the most I've accomplished is changing out the sound card once]
As for make and model --- all I really know is that it is "Intel" inside -using Windows XP and it's about 7 years old- I bought it on Price.com where buyer custom chooses the gigs etc.
Is there a way I can detect any more data on "My Computer" as to what the PC configurations are?

7 years old, from Price.com. Without hands on, determining the specs is problematical. And taking it somewhere for a fix will almost certainly cost more than it is worth.
Assuming you have another PC, saving the data from it (not the applications) is the key thing. It's had a good run. Get the important data from it and let it go.

You are quite right
Kinda thought about that too.....sigh......

I will start the transfer of what I need from this PC
Guess it's time to go shopping- maybe there is a forum on advisable purchase of a "budget" priced PC or laptop -

Will check around
Thanks to all for the help~

In here at Tom's, the general consensus of crossover between buy cheap or build cheaper/better is around $500.

Yes, you can build one yourself if you are so inclined. It isn't as hard as it seems.
