Hi everyone,

This is my current build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1cZvD. I have been tweaking the bios settings a bit and currently I get temperatures in the mid/low 70s when I run prime 95. I have OC'd my cpu to 4.5ghz with input voltage at 2.000V and CPU override voltage at 1.350V, if I go to 4.6 with this voltage my PC crashes but if I increase the voltage I can run it. I'm not sure where to go next because I read online that 1.350V is a really high voltage and should be giving max temperatures even with a high end water-cooling system, which I don't have. Could really use some help, been reading a lot of guides but am getting lost =S. I can provide screenshots and whatever other info is needed.

Hi, so I ran with his settings (the ones provided by a-tuning) and I crashed after the first run of intel burn. It seems like intel burn is a lot more intense than prime 95, as I never crashed with around the same settings on there; what should I tweak in order to get 4.4ghz stable? Also I tried with the minimum for all his values, my temps started around low 80s and then went to mid 60s (guessing the temp spiked when burn started, then cooling system started picking up and cooled it down) and afterwards windows crashed; I'm going to try increasing my voltage to his upper limits and try again, will update with results.

Hi so I ran intel burn on standard and my comp didnt crash at 4.4ghz with the same settings he has in that thread, but running intel burn and having 1 core go up to 100 for a brief moment has scared me into overclocking further, lol. So I guess I'll just stick to 4.4ghz, unless you guys think it's okay to test vs prime95 for stability.

If you are getting spikes and whatnot, might want to check that cooler is seated properly, and TIM is applied right. That cooler should handle the load no problem.

What TIM did you use, and how did you apply it?

Well I usually dont get spikes, im going to run an overnight Prime95 tonight; I used the Thermal Paste (im guessing TIM = thermal paste?) that came with the noctua and i added a small drop and used my finger in a plastic bag to spread it. When I test against prime95 everything seems to be fine and when i test against intel burn the temperatures are consistently high 80s/90s. Do you think my setup would be able to go past 4.4ghz? From what I gather it varies from chip to chip, as well as for which cpu cooler you are using. For a bad chip with the noctua dh-14 it seems like 4.4-5ghz would be around the cap.

IBT does stress on a hotter level than Prime95, hence the name. Using both is a good way to test full stability. It does vary chip to chip yes. But might I suggest trying a different method of TIM application? The method you used may have left some air gaps and uneven application actually.

1) rubbing alcohol and qtip to clean both surfaces completely.
2)apply a bb sized dot to middle of chip IHS
3) seat cooler - flat - do not lay on at an angle
4) tighten crews evenly a little as you go

re run tests and see if that makes a difference. and of course, recheck the bios settings against that guide above too make sure you didnt miss anything. You may want to go into bios and set a custom fan profile turning up the fan earlier and faster too
