i have recently bought an hd 6850 for my pc and need to know if this powers supply is safe to use. raidmax 500w 22 amps on 12v rails
pc: q6700, 4gb ddr2, hd6850.

More about : 22amps 12v rail 6850

You definitely need a new power supply, and don't get another raidmax they are absolute garbage. For a 6850 you need something with atleast 25a on the 12v rail. Here's a good list to refer to http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx. Get something in the top 3 tiers, stay away from tier 4 and especially tier 5(where all raidmax power supplies reside).

will it at least run ok with the hd 6850. no overclocking and such?

I wouldn't run it at all.

If you overload that power supply it will fail and there is a good chance it will damage other hardware when it does.

how can that be when amd website says 500w for this card

Not all power supplies are built and rated the same. The cheap shitty units like raidmax are built with inferior components, cant actually deliver thier rated wattages and usually deliver dirty power(large voltage fluctuations) that cause instability and can damage other components in the system.

Total wattage isn't everything.

22 amps * 12v = 264 watts on 12v.
The card has 127w tdp.

Considering Raidmax is one of the words brands of PSU, I wouldn't do it.

Even if the raidmax had 25a on the 12v rail I still wouldn't suggest using it.

but 264 watts would be plenty to a 127w tdp wouldnt it?

You also have a 95 watt TDP CPU so

127 + 95 = 222.

Add another 2 amps for HDD and FANS.

222 + (12 * 2) = 246w

Keep in mind anything else that might run on +12 and you can see the problem.

As I said earlier these crappy units cant deliver their rated wattages. The answer to your question is no, that psu is not safe to use.

well i got the power supply because the guys at the computer shop said it will work and also said they think raidmax isnt as bad as they used to be lately. anyway looks like its all good and runs fine.

Well regardless, 22 amps is what I would expect from a 300-350w PSU. I wouldn't run a 6850 on that.

Well, the guys at that computer shop are idiots if they suggested you use any Raidmax power supply no matter what the wattage.

Yep they sure are. Ive been running my system with the raidmax for a while now and it seemed ok but games werent performing the way id expected. I ran kumbostor for a bit and temps were good and it hovered around 97-98% but when i ran kumbostor and prime 95 at the same time my gpu usage would throttle up and down around 55-75%. That must be a power thing right?

Very possible, if the video card is not getting enough power or dirty power it can throttle.

Actually that is caused by the CPU bottlenecking because of the prime95 using all the CPU power.

Yeah, i somehow missed that. sorry

Im not understanding this. I thought kumbostor would only stress test my gpu and prime95 was only cpu. I know my cpu bottlenecks but i dodnt think that matters with this test.

I may have inproperly used the word throttling. I meant the usage is going up and down not the clock speeds

I dont understand how my cpu is bottlenecking a gpu stress tester

kombuster stresses mostly the GPU but it still needs some CPU power available to feed the GPU.

Prime95 gobbles every bit of the CPU it can get starving kombuster of the CPU cycles it needs to feed the GPU.

Stopping one prime95 thread would fix it that.

thanks, yeah i can see that now. for some reason though if i run kombuster on its own in 1080p resolution i get 32 fps average and gpu stays at 74% but if i put a full screen window in front of the test my fps jumps to 60 fps and 99% gpu load. this is insanity?
