A lot of what you choose really comes down to personal tastes. I mean, I can suggest a case that's the right price and that meets your needs, but, if you don't like how it looks, then what I think really doesn't matter. I just put this list together based on my experiences with different components and how I felt they performed.

Intel i5-4670K - $240
Corsair H100 - $100 - $80 on sale from NCIX
Asrock Extreme6 Z87 - $170
G. Skill Sniper Series 2x8GB DDR3-1866 - $137 - $123.30 on sale from Newegg
Samsung 840 Series 120GB SSD - $94
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 64MB Cache HD - $63
EVGA Geforce GTX 770 4GB - $510
Corsair 500R Black Case - $115 - $90 on sale from Newegg
Azza 850W PSU - $80 - $60 after mail-in rebate from Newegg
Samsung DVD/CD Writer - $18

Total with sale prices: $1448.30

You can really play with things to work the price into something that's okay for you. You could nix the SSD or get a 2GB video card, as opposed to the 4GB card I prefer. You don't have to have an optical drive, though I prefer one. Other cases are cheaper and would work just as well.

You are going to want to save money for an operating system (unless you have that already) and for peripherals. It may seem silly, but a good (mechanical) keyboard and a good mouse go a long ways to making PC gaming more fun.

Hopefully, you get a few good suggestions on here and can start a list of the parts you want. My biggest regret about how I built my first machine was that I bought everything at once, instead of waiting for each part to go on sale. From that, I learned that you can benefit from shopping by spec as opposed to hunting for specific items. Subscribe to Newegg (or other retailers') ads and watch for sales at stores around where you live, buying the things you want/need as they are on sale. You can save a lot of money doing this.

If you want to get a good idea of what's on the market, stop by the magazine rack at your store of choice and look for the annual build guides that magazines like PC GAMER and MAXIMUM PC put out. They have a lot of good reviews and pictures so you can quickly see if something is to your tastes. Write down the stuff that catches your eye and do online research. Tom's is great for that.

I am glad to hear you want to try PC gaming and wish you luck!

Managed to add an Nvidia GTX 780

Building a computer is really easy, its like adult Legos. Although this video does not have the specified parts in my build, it can help guide you how to build it- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea_bs5G1yYU
